Summary: This starts the night Lucky tried to frame Jason for drug possession. Everything up to that point is the same as on the show. If you can't remember just ask me. I'll be happy to help.

Chapter 1 by lovemyqtkids
How would you like to get rid of Jason Morgan once and for all?
Ric Lansing leaned back in his chair and tapped his fingertips on his desk. He couldn’t stop thinking about his last conversation with Lorenzo Alcazar. Alcazar had offered him a partnership to take down Jason, and ultimately Sonny. Ric had accepted. If it took joining with Alcazar to take down Jason and Sonny then Ric would do it.
September 26, 2006
It had been a rough couple of weeks. Lucky was not going through withdrawal well which made getting through her first trimester smoothly difficult. After talking to both Maxie and Detective Rodriguez Elizabeth was trying to find Jason to warn him that Lucky was out to get him. It had taken her awhile to convince Bernie to tell her where he thought Jason might be. She was almost there when she heard Lucky and Jason on the pier. She could hear Lucky yelling but it wasn’t until she was already around the corner that she realized he was yelling about an ambush. She heard shots and she fell to the ground as quickly as she could. She heard Lucky scream.
She heard footsteps but they sounded far away. She felt gentle hands as Jason reached her.
“Are you hit?”
She lifted her head, but it was a struggle.
He then realized she had been hit. He was reaching for his phone with one hand and putting pressure on her right shoulder with the other one.
“Hang in there, Elizabeth. Help is coming.” The phone call went through. “I need an ambulance on pier 82. A woman has been shot.” He ignored the woman on the line and hung up because he needed both hands to staunch the bleeding. He ripped his shirt off and wrapped it so it was against the entry wound and the exit wound. He refused to acknowledge Lucky who was mumbling and crying a few feet away. “I need you to stay awake. Talk to me, Elizabeth.”
Her eyes blinked a couple times before they opened and fixed on his face. He could barely hear her voice.
“Rains in Uzbek…Uzbek…”
“You forget umbrella.”
“You want to find out for yourself, Elizabeth?”
Her eyes drifted closed.
“No? Not Uzbekistan? Elizabeth.” Her eyes fluttered. “Come on, Elizabeth. How about Italy? Open your eyes and I’ll take you to Italy.”
Her eyes fluttered again a few times before opening most of the way.
“I promise, Elizabeth.”
“Jason? Make them take care of…the baby.”
His eyes widened as he realized what she said. The EMTs descended on them and his hands were swapped for the EMTs. Jason quietly told them she was pregnant. She was assessed and strapped onto the gurney as quickly as they could. She was wheeled away. It was then he realized cops had also arrived with the ambulance. He sighed as he realized it would be awhile before he could check on Elizabeth.
“What happened here, Jason?”
Jason turned to look at Detective Rodriguez and wondered how this would go since he had been Lucky’s partner. He didn’t want to tell the cops anything, but he wanted to check on Elizabeth as soon as he could.
“Lucky called me earlier and told me to come here. When I arrived he pulled a gun on me and told me to drop mine. I put my gun on the ground as he threw two bags of cocaine at my feet and told me he was busting me. I could see he was high and tried to talk him down. We heard some footsteps and he accused me of an ambush. He turned and started firing. He realized too late it was Elizabeth.” He stopped as he relived the moment. “I realized she was shot in the shoulder and I called 911. Can I go now?”
Cruz looked around at the scene as other cops were taking photos of the scene and documenting what was found. He also saw Lucky and realized that no matter what had happened Lucky was probably at fault.
“Yeah, you can go. We’ll find you if we have any more questions. We’ll also return your weapon when we’re done with the investigation.”
Jason was gone before Cruz finished talking. He just shook his head and turned to Lucky who was being restrained in the corner. He pulled out his phone and called the commissioner.
Jason kept clothes in his saddlebag so he threw on a shirt quickly. He raced to the hospital as fast as he could without risking getting pulled over. He rushed into the Emergency Room looking for someone, anyone he knew who could help him. He spotted Epiphany and practically ran to her.
“Where’s Elizabeth? How bad is it? Is she okay?”
“Slow down there, Mr. Morgan. I’m not supposed to tell you any of that.”
“Please.” He could tell he’d shocked her. “I was there when she was shot. She was losing a lot of blood.” He swallowed roughly. “She’s my friend.”
“Come with me.” He walked with her to the elevator. After the doors closed sealing them in alone she started talking. “Elizabeth is in surgery. They’re having to take extra precautions because…” She paused trying to find the right words.
“Because she’s pregnant.”
“She told me right before the ambulance arrived. Told me to make sure they take care of the baby.”
“Okay, well right now their main concern is Elizabeth. They’ll do what they can for the baby, but it’s so early their efforts may not matter.”
His heart stuttered. She couldn’t lose another baby.
“Is there anything I can do?”
“Be her friend, Mr. Morgan.” She pushed open a door. “There's a bathroom down the hall where you can clean up and then you
can wait here. They’ll be taking her to a room just down the hall when
it’s over. I’ll be back later.”
Epiphany had come to get him a couple of hours later. She had explained both Elizabeth and the baby were holding their own after the surgery and had made it through recovery. She was finally in her own room and Jason was allowed to sit with her. He still wasn’t sure why they were letting him since he wasn’t family, but he wasn’t going to question it. He was content to listen to her breathe and couldn’t stop himself from reaching out and holding her hand. He stroked the back of her hand almost absent-mindedly.
“You have to be okay. I can’t take you to Italy if you don’t get better.”
She stirred. Her eyes opened, but they seemed a bit dazed.
“Jason said he’s taking me to Italy.”
He smiled, realizing she was still coming off the sedative.
“What if he’s the father of my baby?”
His hand tightened momentarily around her hand when her words sunk in.
“I might be the father of your baby?”
“Jason might be the father of my baby.” Her voice lowered. “I don’t want it to be Lucky.” She looked upset. “Is that wrong?”
She looked sad.
“Hey, you get to feel how you feel.”
“That sounds like Jason. I know he’d be a good father.”
There was a knock at the door and it was pushed opened to reveal Elizabeth’s obstetrician, Dr. Lee.
“How’s our patient?”
“She’s talking, but she doesn’t seem to know it’s me.”
“That’s normal. She and the baby should be fine as long as she takes it easy.”
They both looked at Elizabeth who had fallen asleep again.
“I’ll be back later when she’s awake.”
She left, leaving Jason to his thoughts.
She panicked inwardly when she opened her eyes and she saw mostly darkness. She took a deep breath when she realized she was just in a dark room and it was fairly dark outside. She looked around and caught her breath when she looked to her left and found Jason looking at her. She couldn’t really see his eyes but felt his gaze nonetheless. He switched on the small light above her bed.
“Hey. You feeling okay?”
She shifted slightly and felt some pain in her shoulder.
“It hurts, but not too—” She stopped and her movement became jerky. “The baby. Is the baby okay?”
Jason moved closer and covered her hand.
She left out a shuddery breath. He caught the first tear as it slid down her cheek.
“I’m so glad.” She tried to look him over, but movement was difficult. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. I’m not the one with a bullet hole.”
“Not a new one, anyway.”
He tilted his head.
“Is that a joke or are you still loopy?”
“It’s a…wait. When was I loopy?”
“You woke up from surgery and were talking to me, but you didn’t really know it was me.”
“Did I say anything embarrassing?”
“No, but you definitely shocked me.”
She caught his gaze and studied him.
“I told you the baby might be yours, didn’t I?”
He let out a breath.
“Yeah. I wasn’t sure if you knew what you were talking about.”
She smiled and put her hand on his arm.
“It’s true. I found out Enduro made a defective batch of condoms.”
“And the reason you came over was to check.”
“Yes. I didn’t want to say anything until I knew for sure. I didn’t want to mess your life up more than necessary.”
“First off, you won’t mess up my life. We’re friends. Second, I’ll admit I was thrown for a loop when you said we might be having a baby, but it’s not a bad thing. Third, what’s next?”
“Kelly said it’s too early for a paternity test so right now we have to wait a couple more weeks. The test is a simple cheek swab for you and it takes a week to get the results.” She paused. “I need to ask you a question.”
“What happened to Lucky?”
“My contact at the station says he was arrested. They’ve got him here under guard while he detoxes. He’s going to be charged with several felony charges, maybe more, depending on what they decide after talking to you.”
He was taken aback.
“Why are you sorry?”
“I’m sorry he went after you.”
“Hey, it’s not your fault. He’s an adult and he did this, not you.”
They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, but she could see his face change as he thought.
“It can’t be that bad, Jason. Just talk to me.”
“We have to talk about what happens if this baby is mine.”
“Guards, security, and such?”
He looked uncomfortable.
“Yes. I know you don’t like it-“
“Jason.” He looked at her. “I’d like to think I’ve grown and matured since we first met. I’m not going to question or argue about anything you think we need to do to stay safe. Now, do you think it’s safe to wait until we know for sure?”
“Maybe, but I’d like to have one guard on you anyway. He can hang back so it’s not obvious. We’re having some problems right now and I’d feel better if you had someone around.”
There was a knock at the door and a nurse poked her head in.
“Your grandmother is here, Elizabeth. Oh, and Dr. Lee will be by later to talk to you.”
“That’s my cue. Is it alright if I come back tonight and check on you?”
“I’d like that.”
He stood up and leaned over. He kissed her forehead as the door opened.
“I’ll see you later.”
Jason nodded at Audrey as he left the room.
“Oh, Elizabeth. What happened?”

was furious and confused. He couldn't understand why he was strapped by
his wrists to the hospital bed. He couldn’t remember what had happened
or why he was here.
“Help me! Someone help me!”
“Please keep your voice down, Mr. Spencer.” Epiphany breezed into the room. “This is a hospital, not a wrestling match.”
“That’s not what I hear.”
“Wait until Mac gets here. He’ll tell you. I busted Jason for drugs so what am I doing here? Why am I tied to the bed?”
“You’ll have to talk to the officer outside. Someone will be back soon to check on you.”
“Wait. I need to speak to Elizabeth. I need my wife. Please find Elizabeth. She’ll come.”
“She will not be helping you, Mr. Spencer.”
She headed for the door.
“Come back! Let me out! Find Elizabeth!”
Soon he was screaming in an empty room.
“What happened, Elizabeth? Where’s Lucky?”
“Gram, please sit.”
“Are you okay?”
“I’ve been better. Lucky shot me.”
Audrey’s face showed her shock. Elizabeth sighed.
been having an affair with Maxie Jones for drugs. Mac found out and
fired him so Lucky thought he could get his job back by framing Jason
for drug possession. I tried to stop Lucky from doing something stupid
so I went looking for him. I found him and Jason on the pier. When he
heard me coming he turned and started firing. I ended up here and Lucky
is in custody.”
“It was an accident, darling.”
Elizabeth’s voice was low and sad.
“Gram, he’s addicted to drugs and has been refusing to see he needs help. It doesn’t matter if it was an accident.”
“But surely he’ll go into rehab now and things will be okay.”
Elizabeth looked out the window and sighed.
Elizabeth looked to the door when someone knocked. It was opened and Mac entered.
“Is this a good time, Elizabeth? We need to take your statement.”
“Sure, Mac. Come on in.”
“Would it be better if we came back?”
“Oh, not unless it’s better for you. I’m not going anywhere.”
“I’ll bring Cameron by later.”
“Thanks, Gram.” Audrey left the room. “How’s Maxie?”
“She’s doing better, thank you.”

and Cruz found me yesterday worried about Lucky going after Jason.
After calling around I found out where he might be. When I got down to
the pier I could hear both Jason and Lucky. By the time I got close
enough to understand what they were saying Lucky was yelling about an
ambush. When I came around the corner he started shooting at me. I tried
to drop to the ground, but he hit me anyway. The rest is fuzzy. I know

erasing at the bottom and worked her way up. She got to the name at the
top and found it was Elizabeth’s. She was alarmed to see gunshot listed
and that she’d been sent to surgery. Emily knew she wouldn’t be allowed
to leave her shift so she threw herself into her work. When it was time
for her lunch break she rushed to the nearest nurses’ hub to use the
computer. She found Elizabeth in the system and noted her room number.
She was going up in the elevator moments later. She practically ran down
the hallway. She was out of breath when she pushed the door open.
Elizabeth sat up in bed and cried out when pain shot through her
shoulder. Emily rushed to her side. “Are you okay?”
focused on her breathing and trying to not pass out as she laid back
down. She finally looked at Emily after she was calm.
“I was sleeping, Em. You scared me to death.”
“I’m sorry. I just found out you were here while I was working in the emergency room. Are you okay?”
“I’ve been shot so things could be better. I’m in more pain than I want to be, but that, too, will get better.”
Emily looked over at the machines near the bed. Her face scrunched up in puzzlement.
“Why don’t they have you on morphine?”
“I can’t really take morphine right now.”
Before she could continue the door opened again and Nikolas barged in.
Nadine told me you were in here. Lucky’s upstairs…Elizabeth. What
happened to you?” He came all the way to her and covered her hand with
his. “Are you alright?”
“I’ll be okay. Lucky was high and he shot me.”
“What? That can’t be right.”
was trying to frame Jason with drug possession. I tried to stop him. He
thought Jason had set up an ambush and he fired at me when I came
around the corner.”
Her friends were stunned into silence. She understood their shock so she just waited.
“And you're really okay?”
She understood what he was asking.
“Yes, everything is fine except for being shot.”
He looked relieved.
Emily’s voice was uncertain.
“Do you mind if I go check on him? I only have a little time left on my break.”
Elizabeth smiled trying to ease her discomfort.
“Em, go be his friend.”
“Hey, we can talk about it later, okay?”
Emily really looked at her friend and realized now wasn’t the time.
“Okay. Call if you need anything.” She leaned over and hugged Elizabeth carefully. “I’ll be back after my shift.”
“I’ll be up in a minute.” After she left Nikolas sat in the chair next to the bed. “You’re sure you and the baby are alright?”
“As far as I know.” Her eyes watered. “I can’t believe he’s this far gone, Nikolas.”
He sighed raggedly.

“Me, too.” Her voice broke. “I can’t help him anymore. I can’t.”
His voice was sad.
officer outside of Lucky’s hospital room checked his list of approved
visitors and let Emily into the room. Lucky had quieted, but was glaring
out the window.
His gaze swung to the door.
You’ve got to help me. I don’t know why I’m tied up. They won’t find
Elizabeth for me. I don’t understand. Please help me, Emily. I don’t
She came closer to the bed and put her hands on his
right one. She could see him trembling and he was sweating. She knew his
withdrawal would only get worse. Her heart broke for the sadness in his
voice and his condition.
“Lucky, I am going to help you, but I can’t untie you.”
“What? Why not? I don’t belong here. I need Elizabeth. She will help me.”
“No, she won’t.”
Nikolas’ voice was hard as he stood in the doorway. Lucky’s voice came out in a whine.
“No buts, Lucky. You’re in such denial about your addiction you have no idea what you’ve done.”
“What do you mean, what I’ve done?”
“What did you do last night?”
“I busted Jason Morgan for drugs.”
Nikolas slammed his hands on the foot rail.
you didn’t. You stole drugs and tried to frame Jason for drugs. What
you actually did was shoot your wife because you were high.”
“What? No, I didn’t.”
“Yes, you did.”
started to speak, but his forehead furrowed as he tried to remember the
events from the night before. He remembered calling Jason and telling
him to come to the pier. He remembered throwing the drugs at Jason’s
feet and bragging about catching the great Jason Morgan. He fell back
onto the bed when he suddenly remembered Elizabeth showing up at the
same time Jason ambushed him.
“No, I shot the guy Jason had ambush me.”
“There was no guy, Lucky. Only Elizabeth.”
“No, no, that’s not—“ His shoulders slumped. “That’s not possible.”
“You have a problem, Lucky.”
Emily moved back towards Nikolas and put a comforting hand on his arm.
“I think he gets it.”
“He’d better.” He looked at her then. “I need to talk to Mac and see what’s next for him. See you later?”
He gave her a quick kiss before leaving.
“Lucky, you need help.”
“I need Elizabeth.”
“You shot her. She’s not coming anywhere near you.”
“You need help first, Lucky. Then I’ll talk to her.”
Jason having meetings and Sam being with her mom at the hospital he and
Sam had been playing phone tag most of the day. Jason left another
message for her before getting on the elevator in the lobby of General
Hospital. She must have been in with Alexis and her doctors discussing
her treatment plan. As he rode the elevator up to Elizabeth’s floor he
wondered how he was going to tell Sam Elizabeth might be having his
child. They had decided only the day before to try their relationship
again and he wasn’t sure what they would do if he was going to be a
father. He did know he couldn’t keep it from her, but first he would
talk to Elizabeth.
He entered her room quietly and
shut the door behind him. He leaned against it a moment watching her
sleep. The night of the blackout with her had been unexpected, but he
didn’t regret it. Not before he found out he could be a father and not
now. Elizabeth stirred and he pushed off the door and made his way to
the chair by her side. He reached for her hand.
“Hey, how you feeling?”

give me strong medicine for the pain so I don’t sleep well.”
alright. It’s not your fault.” She grinned at him. “Okay, it might be
your fault they can’t give me the good stuff. I’ll blame you in a few
weeks if the test says so.” He gave her a ghost of a smile. He suddenly
rubbed his free hand down his leg to his knee. “What’s wrong?”
He blew out a breath.
wrong.” He hesitated. “I need to talk to you about Sam. I guess first I
should ask you if you’re going to tell Lucky.”
“Oh.” She leaned
back against the bed which meant her hand pulled out of his grasp. He
wondered if that was deliberate. “You and Sam are together?”
He cleared his throat.
“Yeah, we talked during Alexis’ surgery yesterday and decided we would like to give it another try.”

before looking back into his eyes. “You want to tell her about the
“If we’re going to have any chance then I need to be honest.”
I get it. As for Lucky, I just don’t know. He’s in such denial about
being an addict I don’t know if it’s a good idea to tell him I’m
pregnant and need a paternity test.”
“I can understand that.”
“But I promise I will tell him after we know for sure.”
“Let’s get you healed first. Sleep.”
sat in silence for awhile as she tried to sleep. Her body finally gave
in and she started to drift off. She had one last comment.
“You don’t have to stay.”
Chapter 3 by lovemyqtkids
September 28, 2006
When Sam got home from the hospital after spending another night with her mother she saw she had a message from Jason. She smiled and listened to it. He wanted to meet later that day and that made her happy. It looked like Alexis was going to make it through after all so she didn’t have to worry about giving up Jason. She sent him a quick text telling him she was going to take a nap and she’d meet him at the penthouse early afternoon.
After she had rested and showered she gave Kristina and Molly a kiss and said good-bye to their nanny Viola before she headed over to Jason’s place. She knew they had a lot to work through, but she was hopeful.
She realized he must have been standing near the door because he answered it almost immediately. She was hoping he was just excited to see her. She tipped up on her toes and met him for a quick kiss. She set her purse on the desk and walked further into the living room.
“I’m glad you left me a message. I know it’s only been two days since I’ve seen you, but it feels like forever.” She thought she felt the mood shift, but she shrugged it off. “What have you been up to?”
“Have a seat.”
“That sounds ominous.”
“I guess it depends on how you look at it.”
She sat down carefully on the couch and watched him sit across from her on the coffee table. He took her hands in his and she started trembling. She had a feeling this would not be good at all.
“It’s okay to tell me, Jason.”
“Elizabeth is pregnant and I could be the father.”
“What? Pregnant?” Her voice was a whisper. “How could you?”
He shook his head.
“We were careful, but the brand we used was defective.”
She fought back the tears.
“When will you know?”
“Not for awhile. It’s not safe to do the test for a few more weeks.”
“Oh. Does Lucky know?”
“No, and it needs to stay that way. At least for now.”
Her voice became emphatic.
“What? Why? He could be the father, Jason.”
“He’s an addict and he’s out of control. He tried to set me up with drugs and shot her when he thought I was ambushing him.”
“She was with you?”
“No. She was trying to find me to warn me Lucky was out for blood. He heard her coming and started shooting. He shot her in the shoulder. She’s in the hospital and he’s in custody.”
“Okay, I won’t say anything.” She looked up at him. “What are you going to do if the baby is yours?”
“Be a father.”
Elizabeth had roused enough to realize Jason was leaving in the early morning before falling asleep for a few more hours. It wasn’t peaceful sleep, but she did feel better when she woke up. Nadine came by for her morning check and helped her brush her hair and teeth for the day.
“Thank you. I feel human again.”
“How’s your shoulder?”
“It hurts, but it’s not too bad if I don’t move.”
“Good. Well, you have the call button if you need anything. I’ll be back in a bit.”
As Nadine left she pardoned herself as she came into contact with someone just outside the door. Elizabeth wondered who it was until Ric came into view. She put her hands together in her lap and waited for him to speak. He shut the door behind him and was smart enough to stop at the foot of the bed.
“I just heard what happened. Are you okay?”
She tried to keep annoyance out of her voice.
“I know Lucky is in no position to help you right now so please let me.”
“Thank you, Ric, but I’ve got it covered.”
“Please, Elizabeth. Your husband has been arrested.”
“She doesn’t need your help, Ric. Why don’t you go find my aunt and help her?”
Ric turned to see Nikolas with his arms crossed and glaring at him.
“You don’t speak for her.”
“You have a wife, Ric. Quit sniffing around Lucky’s.”
“After what I’ve heard I don’t think she’ll want—“
“That’s enough.” Both men turned and looked at her. “Thank you for stopping by, Ric, but I don’t need your help.”
“I’ll stop by when you’re feeling better.”
Nikolas opened the door.
“No, you won’t.”
Ric ignored him.
“I’ll see you later, Elizabeth.”
Nikolas barely let Ric get through the doorway before shutting the door.
“I didn’t need your help.”
He put his hands in his pocket as he approached her at the head of the bed.
“I know. There’s just something about him that irks me.”
“You don’t have to convince me. I know firsthand.”
“I don’t want to talk about it right now, okay? How’s Lucky?”
“Withdrawal sucks, as you know. Mac won’t talk to him until he’s sober. But it doesn’t matter right now. How are you today?”
“Sore. Tired. Sad.”
“What do you need?”
She looked out the window.
“Can you turn back time?” She looked at him again. “But then I wouldn’t have this baby so I don’t really wish that. I wish a lot of things, but I can’t be sorry for this baby, no matter what.”
The door opened and they heard Robin’s voice.
“Knock, knock. Up for visitors?”
She came in carrying Cameron on her hip. Elizabeth teared up.
“Oh, yes, please.” Robin carried him to the left side of the bed. He snuggled into Elizabeth’s side and started talking. When he took a breath Elizabeth spoke quickly. “Why do you have him?”
“Your grandmother was running a bit late so she dropped him off before her shift. I’ll be back in a bit to take him to daycare. Use your button if you need me sooner.”
“I’m going to head out, too. Give you some time with Cam. Call me if you need me.”
“Thank you both.”
She slid down a bit to hug her son as her friends left the room.
Elizabeth was tossing a pencil onto the table over her bed when Jason entered her room.
“I can’t sketch with my left hand. Stupid jerk couldn’t shoot me in my left shoulder?” She looked up and saw his surprise. “Sorry. I’m grumpy. I’m even more tired and sore than I was when you were here last night. I want to go home, but I won’t be any more useful there than here.” Her voice caught. “I can’t even pick up Cam.”
“Do you need some help?”
“Yes. No.” Her voice was frustrated. “I don’t know. I want to go home with Cameron, but I’ll have to fight everyone. I know people will offer to help but they have lives and jobs, too. I can’t ask them to help day after day. It’s just too much.”
He put his hand on hers to stop her.
“Breathe. It’s going to be okay.”
She took a deep breath.
“I think I can help. Michael’s nanny, Leticia, has a sister. How about I talk to her. She can help you out once you get home. She can do the heavy lifting, so to speak, and you can do what you can. When you’re all healed she can go home.”
She looked at him a moment.
“I’ll think about it.”
“Good enough.” He smiled. “How long they keeping you in here?”
“I’ll be trapped at least a week.”
“Yes, trapped. I don’t like being in here any more than you.”
“What can I do?” He could see she was uncertain so he used her own words. “It can’t be that bad, Elizabeth.”
“It’s not bad. I just don’t want to make you do something you’re not comfortable with.”
“Let me decide.”
She looked him in the eyes for a moment.
“Okay, okay. It’s probably silly, but…will you talk to me until I fall asleep?” She looked away from him then. “My brain won’t shut off. I try to sleep, but I can’t stop thinking. I try to relax and not think, but I end up on the pier with Lucky shooting me. Then I try to slow my breathing—“
She stopped when his hand covered hers.
“It’s okay. Close your eyes.”
“Are you sure?”
“Close your eyes and I’ll tell you all about Morocco.”
October 3, 2006
It had been a long week for Elizabeth. She hated being in the hospital and unable to do much so she was glad she was being released. It helped her that she had taken an active role in going home. Her doctor had told her she would need live-in help and she had shocked her family and friends when she told them she wasn’t going home with any of them because she had already hired someone to stay with her. She refused to tell them more because she didn’t want to argue yet again about Jason helping her. Mercedes had been by the hospital to meet Elizabeth and Cameron and things had gone well so Elizabeth had no reservations. They also didn’t need to know she and Cameron would have discreet guards. She didn’t care how they felt anymore. She just wanted to go home. She settled into her wheelchair and Mercedes walked next to her as the orderly pushed her towards the elevator. They would head down to daycare and pick up Cameron before starting this new chapter in their lives.
Elizabeth wasn't entirely surprised to see her grandmother waiting for her outside of daycare. She took a couple of deep breaths and hoped her grandmother would behave.
“I wanted to catch you before you left, Elizabeth.”
“I’m just going home, Gram.”
“To that building?”
Elizabeth waited a moment so she wouldn’t snap at her grandmother.
“I can’t go back to the apartment, not when Lucky could make bail and your house doesn’t really have the space we need for a long-term arrangement.”
“I can’t argue with that, but why there?”
“Gram, I am afraid of Lucky. It might be different if I wasn’t recovering from a bullet wound, but the truth is, I am. I cannot protect myself or Cameron right now so, yes, I am going to live in an apartment at Harberview Towers. I am not living with Jason nor am I living on the same floor as him. He is my friend and he’s only trying to make my life easier.”
Audrey pursed her lips.
“I hope you know what you’re doing, Elizabeth.”
“I’m doing my best.”
“Will you at least go see Lucky in jail?”
“I won’t be going to see him. I’m glad he’s detoxed for the moment, but I cannot go see him. I have to take care of Cameron and myself. We come first.” She looked up at Mercedes. “Will you get the door, please?”
Mercedes opened the door and the orderly pushed Elizabeth into daycare.
October 4, 2006
Elizabeth groaned as she shifted to get up from the couch. Mercedes breezed of the kitchen and motioned her back.
“Miss Webber, let me get the door.”
“It’s Elizabeth, please.”
“Okay, Elizabeth. I’m here to help so let me help.”
“Fine, you win.” Mercedes answered the door and stepped back so Elizabeth could see who was there. “You can let them in. Thanks.”
Mercedes stepped all the way back and Nikolas and Emily entered the apartment.
“I’ll be in the kitchen starting on Cam’s snack.”
Mercedes went back into the kitchen and Elizabeth waited for the attack. Emily joined her on the couch.
“How are you?”
Elizabeth blinked in surprise.
“You’re not mad at me?”
“Do I want you to work things out with Lucky? Sure, but I know now is not a good time. I’ll want to revisit this conversation in the future, but I just want you to get better right now. Is it okay to hug you?”
“Just watch out for the arm in the sling.”
They both chuckled.
“I can do that.” Emily gingerly wrapped her arms around Elizabeth and squeezed gently. Her voice was raspy from tears. “I’m so glad you’re okay, Elizabeth.”
“I second that.”
Elizabeth smiled up at Nikolas.
“I still wish you’d come and stay with us at Wyndemere for awhile.”
“I appreciate the offer, Em, but I can’t handle the launch constantly. I’ll explain soon, okay?” Emily eyed her warily, but nodded. “Gram said Lucky is in jail now.”
“He is. He’s being charged with a battery of crimes, from tampering with evidence to reckless endangerment. Alexis hasn’t decided yet to charge him with attempted murder.”
“He fired at your direction because he heard someone. She’s just not sure she can get a conviction.”
“I don’t know what to say. Are you going to help him with bail?”
“He can be released on bail if he agrees to go to rehab. Court ordered rehab is 3 weeks, but he could voluntarily stay for 6 if he chooses.”
“So he’s still in jail.”
Chapter 4 by lovemyqtkids
Still October 4, 2006
Nikolas helped Emily out of the car before giving her a comforting kiss. They laced fingers and walked hand in hand to the Port Charles County Jail. Once they gave their names at the counter it was time to wait. When it was their turn they were given instructions to leave their belongings in a locker and they walked through a metal detector. The guard led them and other visitors into a large, open room filled only with tables set out in a grid pattern. They sat down at an empty table on the far side of the room and waited. Every time the door buzzed they looked to it, but it was about 15 minutes before it was Lucky walking through. He made his way through the tables and sat down across from them.
“You look good, Lucky.”
Lucky shifted nervously.
“Thanks, Em. Thanks for coming to see me.”
“How are you doing?”
“I’m fine. How’s Elizabeth?”
“Recovering. She was released today.”
“Good. Do you know when she’s coming?”
Emily’s voice showed her confusion.
“To see me.”
Nikolas put his hands on the table and leaned forward, his voice low and fervent.
“She is not coming to see you.”
“She’s my wife, Nikolas. She’ll come.”
“You were drugged up out of your mind and you shot her. She is not coming.”
“It was an accident.”
“Because you’re an addict.”
“I am not an addict.”
“The only reason you’re not high right now is because you can’t get to your dealer.”
“I have a medical condition, Nikolas.” He swiped his hand through the air as if pushing the subject away. “Is Elizabeth going home to the apartment or back to Audrey’s?” Nikolas and Emily shared a look. Lucky noticed. “What’s wrong? What’s wrong with Elizabeth?”
“Nothing, Lucky. She’s not going to your apartment or Audrey’s. She has a new apartment of her own.”
Lucky settled back into his chair.
“Oh.” He sat up straight when another thought came to him. “Why didn’t she stay with you?”
“She didn’t think the launch was a good idea. I’m sure with her shoulder healing and her not being able to take morphine—“ Emily stopped mid-sentence. Her eyes widened as the pieces fell into place. “It just wasn’t a good idea being out on the island when she’ll have follow-up appointments.”
Lucky’s eyes narrowed as he thought about what she said. It made sense but he couldn’t help thinking she wasn’t being quite truthful. Nikolas started talking about how Lulu was doing and a possible treatment plan for Laura so the idea was pushed aside.
Lorenzo Alcazar had a plan. Ric Lansing had agreed to be part of that plan, but he was expendable. He would be a scapegoat should the need arise. Alcazar motioned for his newest employee to come forward.
“Mr. Spinelli, your first job is to track Sonny Corinthos and Jason Morgan. Where they go, who they see, what they buy. I want to know if there are any patterns in their schedules.”
“The Jackal is at your service.”
He was not going to stop until he found their weaknesses. Weaknesses could be exploited. He would start with Jason Morgan and when he was out of the way there would be a clear path to Sonny Corinthos.
They were still making their way through the county jail. Once they were outside Emily was still silent. He helped her into the car and made his way to the driver’s side. Once he was in and ready to go she spoke.
“I think Elizabeth is pregnant.”
He turned the car off and turned his upper body to face her.
“Yes, she told me when she was afraid he was taking pills again. She asked me to try and convince him to go into rehab. She didn’t want to tell him because he was, and is, still refusing to believe he has an addiction.” He reached out and stroked her cheek with his thumb. “Are you mad?”
“Not mad. A little hurt, but I know she’s been under a lot of stress. I just want her to know she doesn’t have to do this alone anymore.”
Lucky plopped on his bed and hit the wall in frustration. He didn’t know why anyone didn’t believe him about not having a problem. He was not addicted to pain pills. He could stop any time as was supported by the fact he was in here and doing well. Sure, he had times when he couldn’t concentrate because he could practically taste the medicine and could feel it working as it absorbed into his system, but that didn’t mean he was addicted. He thought about Elizabeth and what she was doing and where she might be. He had forgotten to ask where her apartment was because he had gotten angry about being called an addict. He still thought she should have gone to stay with Nikolas and Emily because that would have been easier for him once he was released from jail. He went back to Emily’s words about Elizabeth and the launch. It didn’t make sense and her comment about not being able to take morphine was downright strange. He sat up suddenly.
“Son of a— Guard! Guard!”
He stalked to the bars as he waited for his guard.
“What is it?”
“I need to speak to my attorney.”
Elizabeth was surprised when Emily showed up later that afternoon. Mercedes headed back to Cameron’s room to play with him. Emily sat next to Elizabeth on the couch, but she seemed nervous.
“Emily? What’s wrong?”
“I know you’re pregnant.” Elizabeth gasped, but didn’t make a sound. Emily reached out and put her hand on Elizabeth’s knee. “I figured it out. I’m not mad, although I wanted to be.” She smiled so Elizabeth would know she was serious about not being mad. “I’m glad Nikolas was there for you, but he’s a boy. You could have come to me.”
Elizabeth smiled back and motioned her closer. She gave her a side hug and then pulled Emily back into the couch. Elizabeth put her feet up on the coffee table and Emily followed suit.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. Things were so volatile with Lucky and I thought his brother could talk some sense into him. As you know it didn’t work. Lucky refuses to admit he’s addicted even though he’s knocked me to the ground and shot me so I can’t tell him about this baby.”
“Even if it’s the reason he goes to rehab?”
Elizabeth sighed sadly.
“Em, you and I both know you have to get clean for yourself.”
Emily matched her sigh.
“I know. I’m just grasping at straws here.”
“Believe me, I get it. But there’s another reason I won’t tell him I’m pregnant.”
“I don’t want to tell him until I know if it’s his baby.”
Emily sat up and twisted to face Elizabeth so fast Elizabeth’s eyes widened.
“What? That’s so not you, Elizabeth.”
“You’re right, but I spent the night with a friend. It wasn’t expected, but I don’t regret it.” Elizabeth watched as Emily considered her words. She could almost see the wheels turning as Emily tried to figure out which friend Elizabeth could have been with. Before Emily could embarrass either of them with a guess Elizabeth confessed. “It was Jason.”
Emily’s mouth fell open. She flopped back into the couch cushions.
“Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.”
Elizabeth laughed and laid her head on Emily’s shoulder.
“We’d both had a really bad day, but I didn’t know that when I showed up. I just wanted to talk to someone who wouldn’t be only Team Lucky. Turned out he’d had just as bad a day and we just talked. We talked a lot and drank a little and it happened. The next morning I went home to divorce my husband and found out he was going to narcotics anonymous meetings so I stayed. I told Nikolas about the baby when I needed his help and I told Jason when Lucky shot me. He also knows he could be this baby’s father. Jason told Sam because she’s his girlfriend. I can’t take a paternity test for a couple weeks so I don’t want Lucky to know anything with the way he is until I have to. I’d rather you not say anything to Nikolas, but if you feel you need to send him to me and I’ll tell him. I don’t want you to wreck your relationship with him because of me.”
“It’s not going to come to that. I’m glad you told me. You don’t have to do this alone anymore.”
October 20, 2006
It was so good to have the sunshine on her face and be able to get out and do things. She had been out on her balcony a lot since she moved in, but it wasn’t the same as getting out of the building and going places. Mercedes, her grandmother, or even Nikolas and Emily had taken Cameron to the park or on outings, but Kelly had wanted her to take it easy and do the minimum while her wound healed. She was out today because she’d been to the hospital earlier for her follow-ups and to get the paternity test done. She was now headed to Kelly’s for lunch with Patrick. Cody opened the door for her and she realized he wasn’t following. She chanced a discreet look back to see he had stopped to sit at a table near the door.
“Hey, sorry I’m late.” She put her purse on the counter and climbed up onto the barstool next to Patrick. “My second appointment ran over.”
“Yes. Restrictions were finally lifted and I can do what I want as long as I’m careful.”
“Good. What about work?”
“I’m still on medical leave for at least another week. Hospital policy.”
Their waitress showed up behind the counter and they stopped to order.
Patrick and Elizabeth swiveled their chairs to look at Lulu who had just come through the doors. Elizabeth spoke when Lulu was closer.
“What’s up, Lulu?”
“Lucky’s court ordered rehab is over next week.”
“I heard, Lulu. I’m glad he’s doing better.”
Lulu waited and when Elizabeth didn’t continue she pounced.
“That’s it? He agreed to rehab because he needs you and you’re having his baby!”
Her voice carried and several people looked their way.
“Don’t bother denying it, Elizabeth. He figured it out. Emily said some things that didn’t make sense to him until he put them all together.”
Elizabeth slid off her stool and gently steered Lulu to the corner.
“I’m only going to say this once. He has to get better for himself or it won’t stick.”
“You know he’ll beat this. He wants to be a father so badly.”
“I’m sorry Cameron doesn’t rate. Go home, Lulu.”
Elizabeth turned her back and went back to her seat. Lulu huffed, but didn’t follow her. Apparently she decided it wasn’t worth staying so she left. Patrick looked at Elizabeth, but closed his mouth when he realized she was shaking.
She put her hand out towards him as if to say she needed a minute. He hesitated before pulling her in for a one-armed hug. His voice was comforting.
“Hey, it can’t be that bad.”
He gave her a napkin and she dried her face.
“Why are you sorry? I hear this is normal for pregnant people.”
“Women. Ladies. Whatever. You know what I mean.”
“I just like messing with you. Lulu said something and it just confirmed what I’d been thinking.”
“She’s a child.”
“You’re a good friend.”
“That goes without saying. You want to talk about it?”
“Fair enough. But the door is always open.”
“Anytime.” He grinned and she knew she was in trouble. “Can we talk about me now?”
“Elizabeth is pregnant?”
Jason looked oddly at Carly before picking up his fork.
“Why do you care?”
“I don’t. I just find it interesting.”
“Because if she’s pregnant then she can go back to her little family and leave you alone.”
He just shook his head and went back to his food. If the results came back the way he wanted Carly was going to lose her mind.
Carly approached Elizabeth’s table after Jason had left. Patrick was paying at the counter and Elizabeth stood up to put her coat on.
“Just because your husband can’t take care of his responsibilities doesn’t mean you should go running to Jason.”
Elizabeth sighed inwardly and rolled her eyes before turning around to face Carly.
“As much as I like getting stopped by people butting into my business I don’t have time today.”
“What do you want, Carly?”
“I want you to stay away from Jason. Don’t go crying on his shoulder about your sad life or how you can’t take care of your two kids by yourself. He and Sam are working things out and no matter how he feels about children you are not good for him.”
“I’d like to say your view is enlightening, but really, it’s getting tired and repetitive. Good-bye, Carly.”
Elizabeth turned on her heel and left Carly sputtering.

“Dude, I mean Mr. Alcazar, sir. The right hand man went to the hospital yesterday. I will find out why.”
tuned him out as Spinelli continued to work on his laptop. He didn’t
expect anything to come of Jason Morgan’s trip to the hospital as he had
several family members who worked there. However, he realized he might
have been mistaken when Spinelli exclaimed quite loudly.
Alcazar tried not to show his impatience.
“What is it, Spinelli?”
“The right hand man is in the system for a baby making test.”
“Sorry. Paternity test.”
Alcazar steepled his fingers together with his elbows on his desk chair.
very interesting. Find out who the mother is and when the results will
be finished. Maybe we can use this to our advantage.”
October 24, 2006
I finish my mandatory rehab, but I am staying for the whole program to
show you I am serious about my recovery. I was mad at first you didn’t
tell me about the baby, but after being in rehab and seeing a doctor I
understand why you didn’t. I was out of control and unpredictable. I’m
hoping once you see I am dedicated you will come visit me here. This
baby changes everything, Elizabeth, and I can’t wait for us to work
things out and be a family.
refolded the letter and put it back into the envelope. She really was
glad he was doing better, but it changed nothing for her. In three more
days she would know for sure who her baby’s father was and then
decisions would need to be made. Until then she would try not to worry
October 26, 2006
Ric was looking at his
file on Sonny once again when there was a knock on his office door. He
called out to give them entrance. The mail clerk came in and gave him a
stack of mail before leaving again and shutting the door. He closed the
folder to focus on the mail. He figured after a break he could get back
to it with fresh eyes and maybe find something on his own to take Sonny
He picked up the first envelope which was only
addressed to the District Attorney’s office. It was at least an inch
thick. He couldn’t help but be curious. He opened it up and pulled out a
pile of papers. The top sheet had large, black letters. Secrets are always more fun when they aren’t your own. He moved the note aside and started reading.
was back at Kelly’s for lunch, but this time it was with Robin and
Nadine. They wanted to eat anywhere but the hospital and she was more
than happy to get out of her apartment again. She waved at Nikolas and
Emily who were at a table near the kitchen and she joined her friends
who had beaten her to the diner.
“Sorry I’m late. Gram had to give me another lecture about giving Lucky another chance.”
“It’s okay. We’ve only been here a couple of minutes ourselves.”
“How’s your shoulder?”
still have to be very careful, but I was given a reprieve from the
sling. I’m still getting used to Mercedes doing most of the work around
the house, but it’s so nice to not have to deal with well-meaning
friends and family.”
Robin motioned to her and Nadine.
“Please tell me we’re not grouped in with the rest of the ‘well-meaning’ friends and family. We’ve been very good.”
Nadine nodded and Elizabeth bit back a chuckle.
no. I’m tired of being treated like I can’t handle my life. They act
like I’m not a grown-up and know my own mind. And yet…”
She trailed off. Nadine finished for her.
“And yet they’re family.”
waitress came over to take their orders when they were interrupted by
the television. Bobbie was turning the volume up because of a news
“We’ve just received word there was a security
breach at General Hospital. Someone hacked into their records and has
released all kinds of information to every news outlet in town. As a
respectable news source we will not reveal the names that were dropped
of to us this morning. However, what we can tell you is we received test
results for all kinds of things including DNA tests and sexually
Elizabeth froze and wondered if she
and Jason were caught in the breach. One of the other waitresses flipped
channels on the television until she found a less reputable station.
“Oh, Clarice. You won’t believe what happened today.”
“Oh, really, Paulette? Do tell.”
Hospital was hacked and we were sent some juicy, juicy news. It’s
always a good idea to get yourself checked for sexually transmitted
diseases, but you never expect to know that your very own Mayor Floyd
would need one of those, too!”
“Girl, you don’t say. Wait. Isn’t the mayor married?”
“Yes, he is.”
“I wonder why he would need that then. Hmm.”
it looks like they’re having quite the par-tay down at the mayor’s
office, if you know what I mean. He was not the only one.”
“That’s not all we got.”
Paulette’s voice became a stage whisper.
“Port Charles’ very own mobster—“
“Alleged mobster, Jason Morgan—“
“He is so easy on the eyes, let me tell you.”
“Hush and let me finish. Jason Morgan is about to be a daddy.”
Paulette’s voice held awe.
“You don’t say.”
do say. We’ll have to do some research to find out who this Elizabeth
Spencer is, but I do think I might be a tad bit jealous.”
“Right? To be able to look at that face on a regular basis?”
“And with that we have to go to commercial.”
descended on the diner as they absorbed the news, but then everyone was
talking. Elizabeth didn’t notice, however. She was stunned into
silence. She was still absorbing the news that she and Jason were having
a baby together. Nadine’s voice jostled her attention back to them.
“Oh, boy.” She covered Elizabeth’s hand with her own and smiled. “Or girl.”
Elizabeth smiled back.
Robin was still stunned.
“You and Jason?”
“Are having a baby.”
“You good with that?”
“Yeah, I am.”
Sonny put down his fork.
“I guess that explains Cody being here.”
“When I found out I could be the father I put Cody on her just to be safe. We were supposed to get the results tomorrow.”
“Someone changed the game plan. Think it was Alcazar? Ric?”
“Could be either of them or someone new. I’ll have Stan check it out.”
“That’s good. In the meantime…congratulations, Jason.”
“Well, that complicates things, doesn’t it?”
Emily looked at Nikolas.
He studied her face.
She clasped her hands together in her lap.
“Alright, yes. I knew it was a possibility, but Elizabeth asked me to keep silent.”
He leaned over and gentled pulled one of her hands out of her lap and placed it between his hands.
not mad. I can see now why she didn’t want Lucky to know.” He put his
hand up when she opened her mouth. “He was in no condition to know
anyway, but knowing she slept with Jason is only going to make things
more volatile. I should go see him and break it to him gently.”
“I’ll go with you unless you think I shouldn’t.”
He lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed it.
“I want you there.”
headed to the counter to pay. Emily grabbed her purse and practically
ran to Elizabeth’s table. She slid into the empty seat. She made eye
contact with Nadine and Robin, but her focus was Elizabeth.
“How are you?”
“I’m good. I’m sorry this will hurt people, but I can’t be sorry.”
“No, I get it. We’re going to go check on Lucky. Call you later?”
It was a little awkward in adjacent seats at the table, but they hugged
and Emily stood up. “Em?” She looked down. “Thanks.”
“I love you. It’ll be okay.”
had been going through the pile, piece by piece, learning all kinds of
things about most people he didn’t know. He had been interested to see
the test results for several key members of the mayor’s office and was
still pondering how he might be able to use to that his advantage when
he saw Jason Morgan’s name. He sat up straighter and couldn’t wait to
use this to take down his enemy. That is, until he saw what it was and
that it had to do with Elizabeth. His hands curled into tight balls
crushing the paper in his hands. How could she sleep with Jason Morgan?
And now she was going to have a baby with him? It should be him, Ric,
who was raising a child with Elizabeth, not Jason. He unclenched his
fists and smoothed out the paper. Jason’s child would be the key to
taking him down. Ric couldn’t harm it as that would devastate Elizabeth,
but there had to be a way he could get Elizabeth to love him again.
What if Ric could raise Jason’s child? That would make Jason lose focus
and therefore he would be a liability. It was definitely worth looking
Monica rushed into the dining room to grab
lunch before her shift. She had slept longer than she had planned to
after an unexpected surgery from the night before. She looked around but
she was alone. She went down the hall to Edward’s study to look for him
and Alan. She found them both, but they were unnaturally quiet with the
television being the only noise. She was alarmed.
“What’s wrong? Who’s hurt? Do we need to go?”
Alan put his hand out and she came to him. He tugged gently and pulled
her to him, then he stood up. “No one’s hurt. But this is going to be a nightmare.”
“What’s a nightmare?”
hospital records were hacked. All kinds of information was leaked. I
need to go talk to Legal and Security and see how we can keep this from
happening again.” His phone rang. “I need to take this. I’ll probably be
late tonight. Have Father give you the good news.”
He gave her a kiss before answering his phone and leaving the room.
“It’s not a complete nightmare, Alan.”
Edward’s voice called out to Alan as he left. She was taken aback when Edward’s face transformed into undisguised glee.
“This is the best news, Monica, and the way to bring that wayward boy back into our family.”
“What wayward boy?”
“Jason is going to be a father. I have no idea the circumstances, but he and Elizabeth Spencer are having a baby.”
“Where in the world did you hear that? She’s married to Lucky.”
“True, but you know what he did to her last month.”
my dear, we just heard it on the news. Someone hacked the hospital and
all kinds of records were leaked, including a paternity test Jason took
for that lovely girl’s baby.”
She wondered if she needed to warn Jason about his grandfather.
had gotten a call and left the diner before Jason could talk to her.
Cody’s text had let him know Cameron had gotten sick and Elizabeth had
left to pick him up and take him home. He had to stop at the hospital
and talk to Sam and then he would call and see if he could stop in and
see Elizabeth. He wanted, no, needed to talk to her now that they knew
they were having a baby together. He was still stunned by the news, but
he couldn’t say he was sorry about it. He never expected to sleep with
her but he just couldn’t let her leave that night. And now they would be
connected forever. He wouldn’t be sorry about that no matter how
selfish it was. He was crossing the pier when he saw Carly coming from
the other direction. She was on her phone and when she saw him her face
lit up and she hung up. He realized she obviously hadn’t heard the news.
This was going to be interesting.
She ran down the few stairs and jumped at him. His arms came up and hugged her.
“Hey, Carly. Back already?”
“Yes. Things wrapped up quicker in Montreal than I thought so I came home.”
“It went well?”
did. Jax and I have been thinking about changing computer programs and
we wanted to see how a hotel in Montreal is using the new one.”
“Good.” He led her to the bench and motioned for her to sit down. “I need to talk to you.”
“You’re scaring me.”
“I don’t mean to. It’s just important.”
She sat down and he sat next to her.
“I’m going to be a father.”
She threw her arms around him.
pregnant? Oh, Jason, I’m so happy for you! When did you find out? When
is her due date? We have so much to do before then!”
Jason gently pulled away and grasped her hands and held them.
“It’s not Sam.”
Carly was visibly stunned.
“What do you mean it’s not Sam? Who else could it be? No one else is preg— No!” She pulled out of his grasp. “Not her, Jason! How could you?”
His voice was low and forceful.
“How could you sleep with Elizabeth and be foolish enough to get her pregnant?”
He looked down momentarily to calm himself.
“It doesn’t matter what happened. What’s important is Elizabeth and I are having a baby.”
Carly’s face changed making her look like she’d sucked on a lemon.
“And what about Sam? Are you dumping her for Elizabeth?”
“Sam and I are working on things. I just found out I’m the father and I’m on my way to talk to her now.”
“Well, don’t get any ideas. I can’t imagine what this will do to Lucky.”
He glared at her.
“I don’t care what it does to Lucky. He’s a drug addict who wouldn’t put his family first.”
She looked at him suspiciously.
“That’s right, Jason. His family. Let them work it out. You don’t need to save Elizabeth.”
He took another deep breath and counted in his head. He stood up.
“Try and be happy for me, Carly, and leave Elizabeth alone.”
He left her on the pier with her guard nearby. She crossed her arms and looked to where she last saw him.
“Not a chance, Jason.”
Chapter 6 by lovemyqtkids
October 26, 2006
Audrey was coming down the stairs as Elizabeth let herself into her grandmother’s house.
“How is he?”
“He’s been throwing up, but he’s asleep now.”
“I’m sorry. He must have picked up some germs from his playdate yesterday.”
“It’s okay, Elizabeth. Kids get sick.”
“I know, but you don’t need to get sick.”
“Which is why I called you. I loved spending time with him, but it’ll be better when he’s feeling like himself.”
“I understand. I’ll get him in a minute. There’s something I need to tell you.”
“You went to see Lucky?”
Elizabeth’s tone was patient.
“No, Gram. I didn’t. I’m pregnant and—“
“He needs to know, Elizabeth.”
“No, he doesn’t.”
“Gram.” Her voice was forceful. “This baby is Jason’s.”
Audrey stared at her in shock. She started to say something, but Cameron’s cry interrupted them. Elizabeth opened the door and asked Cody to get Mercedes from the car. Once she was inside they went upstairs together. In a few minutes she was coming down the stairs, followed by Mercedes who was carrying Cameron.
“You can’t be serious.”
Elizabeth looked her in the eyes and sighed. She picked up the diaper bag and her purse.
“We’ll talk about it later.”
Elizabeth opened the door and her hand convulsed around the handle when she found Lucky on the other side. She knew Cody and Greg were on alert no matter how relaxed they seemed while guarding her door.
“I need to talk to you.”
She motioned him in.
“Cody, would you please come inside while Lucky is here?”
He was inside before she finished and stood by the door.
“Really, Elizabeth? I’m not here to hurt you.”
“You’re supposed to be in rehab.”
“How did you know where to find me?”
“I called your grandmother and she told me where to come. She sounded strange, but that’s not why I’m here. Have you seen the lies the news has been reporting? Someone made up a fake DNA test saying Jason Morgan is the father of our baby.”
“No, they didn’t.”
“I saw it on tv, Elizabeth!”
“Don’t raise your voice, Lucky. Cameron is sleeping in his room.”
He looked contrite, but only for a moment.
“We need to sue the station, Elizabeth.”
She braced herself.
“It’s not a lie, Lucky. I had a paternity test done at the hospital and Jason is the father of my baby.”
“Why would you say that?”
“Because the results are back now.” She sighed. “We were supposed to get the results tomorrow, but somebody hacked the hospital.”
He stumbled back as her words really sank in. His voice was rough.
“How could you? How could you sleep with Jason Morgan?”
“It wasn’t planned. I went to him to talk.”
His voice turned taunting.
“You were just talking and you fell on him and made a baby? Come on, Elizabeth. You can do better than that.”
“I do not have to explain myself to you. It doesn’t matter how I ended up sleeping with Jason. Especially considering you were prostituting yourself for drugs at the time.”
“I have a condition.”
“You have an addiction.”
“I do not.” He suddenly changed subjects. “I want to see Cameron.”
They were interrupted by a knock on the door. Cody opened it.
“Miss Webber, Emily Quartermaine and Nikolas Cassadine are here to see you.”
“Let them in, please.”
Nikolas swept past Cody and Elizabeth and stopped in front of Lucky.
“Why are you out of rehab, Lucky?”
“I saw the news and had to come tell Elizabeth the lies they are spreading only to find out it was my wife who was lying.”
“She’s not going to be your wife for long.”
“That’s right. She’s a mobster’s whore.”
Nikolas punched him in the face and then tried to help him up off the floor. Lucky pushed him away.
“You’re going back to rehab.”
Lucky shook him off.
“No, I’m not. I only went to rehab because I thought I was going to be a father. I’m done with my mandatory term and you can’t make me go back.”
He stormed out. Nikolas kissed Elizabeth on the cheek.
“We’d better keep an eye on him. We’ll come back later.”
Emily hugged Elizabeth and then followed him.
Monica was at the hub discussing medication with a nurse when she saw Jason come out of a room and head her way. She excused herself and stepped down from the desk and into Jason’s line of sight.
“Do you have a minute, Jason?”
“Is everything okay?”
“Yes, Jason.” He nodded and followed her to the deserted seating area nearby. “We heard your news and want to congratulate you.” She watched as his facial expression softened and she was fascinated. “Elizabeth is a lovely woman. You two will be wonderful parents.”
“Thank you.” He hesitated. “It was a surprise.”
She wanted to smile, but didn’t.
“But a good one.”
A ghost of a smile crossed his face.
“Yes, a good one.”
“I do feel the need to give you a heads up, though. Your grandfather was rather giddy at the news.” She put her hand out, started to pull it back, and then put it on his knee anyway. “He means well, but he doesn’t always go about things the right way. I just thought you should know.”
“I appreciate it.”
They both turned when Monica’s name was called.
“I’ve got to run. It was good to see you, Jason. And again, congratulations.”
A nurse rushed over to talk to her and Jason headed for the elevator.
Milo was standing at the door to the roof. Jason nodded to him and opened the door stepping out. He closed the door behind him and walked to the far side where Sam was leaning on the short wall. She turned her face to look at him when he joined her.
“I can’t believe it, Jason.”
“It’s definitely a shock.”
“Do you think it’s true?”
He was stunned by her question.
“It’s a possibility, Jason. Why else hack the hospital and leak it?”
His brow furrowed as he thought on her words.
“It just doesn’t make any sense for someone to change the results to me. Who would that benefit?”
She muttered under her breath.
“What was that?”
She sighed loudly.
“Nothing. What’s the plan now that you’re having a child with someone else?”
“I don’t know. I need to talk to Elizabeth.”
“Already talking like half of a couple. How long before you break up with me for her?”
“What? No, Sam. She and I are friends who are having a baby together. I know we need to work through what happened during the summer, but I love you and we’re trying.”
Jason talked to Cody and Greg before knocking on Elizabeth’s door. He saw Cam laying on the couch with his eyes closed. She was coming out of the kitchen while drying her hands on a small towel. She laid it on the table.
“Thanks for coming here.”
“It’s not a problem.” He stopped behind the couch. “How’s Cam?”
“He’s not throwing up which is good, but he’s still rather peaked. He was watching tv earlier, but I think he’s finally asleep. I wanted to call you earlier, but I had to pick him up. My grandmother can’t afford getting sick at her age.”
“I’m sorry he feels bad.” Cameron’s eyes flickered a few times before opening. “Hey, Cam.”
Cameron smiled sleepily. His voice came out as a whisper as his eyes drifted shut again.
Elizabeth leaned over the couch and felt his forehead with her wrist.
“You rest, baby.” She stood back up and tilted her head toward the balcony. She grabbed a sweater from the back of the couch and put it on as she went. He followed her as she slid the doors open and sat on one of the cushioned chairs. “I guess we need to make plans.”
He sat on the other chair.
“Are you afraid?”
She tilted her head as she considered his question.
“I’m a mom. I’m always afraid.” He sighed. “I’m sorry. Bad time for a joke. But I am serious. I’m always making sure Cam can’t touch anything, eat anything, go near anything that might hurt him. That’s what a parent does.” She made she he was looking her in the eyes. “You’re basically a parent already, Jason. You make sure everyone around you is as safe as possible.” She reached out and his hand met her halfway. She squeezed his fingers. “I’m not ashamed or embarrassed to be having a child with you.”
He bowed his head momentarily. His face lifted and he held her gaze again.
“I know this is going to be all kinds of complicated, but I’m not sorry for this miracle we created, Elizabeth. I will do my best to protect you and your children.”
“I know you will.” She looked out into the darkness for a second. “I do have a few questions.”
“What happens now, safety wise?”
“Your guards will no longer be discreet. They won’t be in your way, but they won’t be trying to keep people from seeing them, either. There’s a guard for each of you, including Mercedes.”
“Three guards if we all go out?”
“One guard will be close while the other two keep an eye out.”
“I’m not criticizing, just making sense. I promised you I wouldn’t fight you on this. Will Cody or the other guards listen to me?”
“It will depend on the situation. Is there something specific you had in mind?”
“Will they keep certain people away from us? I don’t want Lucky near Cam.”
“Yes, they can do that. They’re there to protect you. And there will be times you will need to do what they tell you, no questions asked. I need you safe, Elizabeth.”
She tried to ignore the butterflies his emphatic voice gave her.
“Okay. Is it a problem to work at the hospital?”
“To be honest, I don’t like it, but as long as things are calm and Alan doesn’t fight about your guard I will deal with it.”
“Thank you because I have to be able to support my children. I know you will want to help, but I won’t let you do everything.”
“Won’t stop me from wanting to.”
Her expression softened.
“I know and I appreciate it.” She hesitated. “There is one thing you can do for me now.”
“I already talked to Mercedes. She’s willing to stay for as long as we need her. It’s not easy to admit I do need—“
His hand on hers stopped her mid-sentence.
“I’m happy to keep paying her.”
“How is your shoulder?”
“I still have to be pretty careful. I can’t believe all the stuff you were trying to do back then in the studio. Now that I have experience I should have tied you down to keep you from doing too much.”
“Well, if I’d known that was an option.”
“You shush.” She laughed to give herself a moment to recover. “I’ll give you plenty of warning for upcoming appointments. I’m not high risk so I’ll go once a month until month seven. I figure we can work out the rest as we go along.”
“Sounds good. Anything else?”
“I know you and Sonny have an attorney on retainer. Do you think you could ask her if she knows someone who specializes in divorce?”
“I’ll have Diane call you. She can tell you if she can help you and if she can’t, she can find someone who can.”
“I can’t afford her, but I’ll talk to her and see what we can do.”
Chapter 7 by lovemyqtkids
October 31, 2006
“Are you at the warehouse today?”
“Yeah. Is something wrong with Elizabeth?”
Jason could hear a bell ding and voices in the background.
“Yes. She got called to the hospital today, but after a conference with Epiphany she’s just not herself.”
“Are you at Kelly’s?”
“I’ll be there soon.”
Elizabeth jumped in her seat when she felt a hand on her arm.
“I didn’t mean to scare you, Elizabeth.”
Elizabeth looked up at Bobbie.
“It’s alright. I’m in my own world today.”
Bobbie joined her at her table.
“Anything I can do?”
“Got a job handy?”
“If you need one.”
Elizabeth had been kidding, but she sat up straighter.
“Yes, really, but surely you don’t need a job.”
“I need a temporary job, at least. And a permanent job if the investigation doesn’t go my way.”
Elizabeth’s shoulders slumped.
“What happened, Elizabeth?”
“Lucky went to Alan Quartermaine and told him I was the one who stole drugs for him.”
“You would never do that.”
“I wouldn’t, but Dr. Quartermaine has to investigate. Well, someone does. I’m sure he can’t do it because that would be a conflict of interest.”
“Are you sure you want to come back here?”
“Do you really need someone?”
“Then I’m happy to do it.”
“Can you open tomorrow? Wait, not on your birthday. How about Thursday?”
“I’ll be here.”
Both women turned at Jason’s voice.
“I’d better get back to work so I don’t have to fire myself. See you, Jason.”
Jason acknowledged her and then sat in the chair she vacated.
“Hi. Did Cody call you?”
“He was concerned.”
“I was suspended today.”
“Lucky told the hospital I’m the one who stole the drugs for him.” She covered his clenched fist with her hand. “He can’t hurt me anymore. Even if I lose my job he can’t hurt me.”
He nodded slowly. He leaned closer and spoke quietly.
“But if you ever need me to hurt him you know where to find me.”
There were those butterflies again.
“Somehow I think you’d volunteer with or without my approval.”
He shrugged. She laughed.
“What’s going on?”
This time it was Sam’s voice Elizabeth heard.
“Oh, nothing. Just Jason being Jason.”
Elizabeth looked down to look at her phone that had chirped so she missed Sam tense at Elizabeth’s casual reply.
“What are you doing here?”
Elizabeth didn’t know who Sam was talking to, but answered anyway.
“I came to eat, but I now have a job.”
“Oh,” Sam hesitated. “I thought you had a job.”
“Long story, but I need a temporary job.”
“That’s good you found one, I guess.”
“It is good. I’ve got bills to pay.” Elizabeth looked at Jason. Her voice was uncertain. “Is that going to be a problem for Cody?”
“No more so than the hospital.” He glanced up and caught Sam rolling her eyes. “We’ll work it out.”
Elizabeth stood up and looked at Sam.
She picked up her tab.
“Nice to see you, Sam. I’ll talk to you guys later.”
Elizabeth zig zagged through the tables to catch her waitress at the counter. Sam flopped into the seat across from Jason. She crossed her arms across her chest.
“Don’t look at me like that, Jason. I don’t like this.”
“You don’t have to like it, but you can’t act like this.” He sighed. “We still have six months to go. I’m sorry but if you can’t handle it maybe we should cut ties now.”
“No! I’m sorry, okay?” She looked away for a moment and had tears in her eyes when she looked back. She flung her arm out in Elizabeth’s direction. “I just expected that to be me, not her. It’s going to take awhile.”
His voice was gentle.
“Just don’t take it out on her. It’s not her fault.” He pushed his chair back. “I need to get back to the warehouse. I’ll see you later.”
He was gone before she could reply.
Elizabeth answered the door and welcomed Nikolas and Emily in. Emily hugged her.
“How are you?”
“I’m a lot better. I don’t hurt all the time now.”
“Does that mean you’ll be done with Jason’s nanny soon?”
Elizabeth’s eyebrows lifted at Nikolas’ tone.
“I’m sorry. I just worry.”
Elizabeth took a few moments to sit on the chair at the far end of the couch. Her friends followed and sat on her sofa.
“There’s worried, Nikolas, and then there’s just being a jerk. My husband shot me while he was high. I couldn’t work at first because of my injury and then I was suspended because he lied about where he got his drugs. I am not going to let you make me feel bad because I’m accepting help from Jason. If you and Emily were having a baby wouldn’t you help her?”
“Yes, but we’re together.”
“So he shouldn’t help because we’re not in a relationship?”
He put his hands up in surrender.
“I see your point. I just don’t want you to end up in the line of fire.”
She pointed to her right shoulder.
“Where did I get this?”
“Do you need anything?”
“Just your friendship. I’m working at Kelly’s until the board decides what to do about my job.”
“Like old times?”
Emily leaned in and wrapped her arms around Nikolas’ arm.
“We’ll start a new tradition since you can’t have hot chocolate right now.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
“Did you do this?”
Ric threw the crumpled piece of paper onto Alcazar’s desk. Alcazar put his pen down and looked up Ric.
“I told you I was going to bring down Corinthos and Morgan.”
“You didn’t have to drag Elizabeth into it.”
Alcazar leaned back in his chair.
“I didn’t drag her into anything, least of all his bed.”
Ric could barely speak his jaw was clenched together so tightly.
“Don’t talk about her like that.”
“I’m stating facts, Mr. Lansing. I’m only exploiting his weakness. I do not know what his plans were, but now he has to spend his energy on keeping the mother of his child safe and protected. I’m going to chip away at him until he’s so busy he cannot protect his boss. I am not going to harm the lovely Elizabeth, but I am not against using her to help my cause. Our cause.”
“You don’t have to remind me.”
“Oh, I think I do. I will not let whatever feelings you have for Morgan’s lover,” He saw Ric flinch. “to interfere with the endgame.”
He was expecting Ric to argue, but he turned and left instead.
Elizabeth knocked on the door and waited. It wasn’t long before it opened.
“You didn’t have to knock, Elizabeth.”
“I believe it was necessary, Gram. I felt I was summoned, not invited.”
She followed her grandmother into the living room, took her coat off and sat down.
“When is this going to stop?”
Elizabeth’s brow furrowed.
“I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. When is what going to stop?”
“Letting Jason have control over you.”
Elizabeth took a few deep breaths so she wouldn’t say something rash.
“How does he have control over me?”
“Really, Elizabeth. You never could say no to that man.”
“Are you serious? I could never say no to you, Emily, NIkolas, Luke, Laura, all my friends and family, always pushing me to stay with Lucky, help Lucky, save Lucky.”
“That’s because we love you and want what’s best for you.”
“It’s best to be with a man who only went to rehab because he thought he was going to be a father?”
“He loves you.”
“He has a funny way of showing it. But it doesn’t matter. I don’t love him anymore. Too much has happened.”
“Are you in love with Jason?”
Elizabeth shook her head.
“You’ll never change, will you? Jason will always be evil, Lucky will always be good and I’ll always be too stupid to know my own mind.”
“I never said that.”
“Your actions and disdain for my friend speak for you.” She stood up and gathered her things. “I think it’s best if you don’t contact us anymore. I don’t need the stress and I refuse to let you poison Cam.”
She headed to the door and never looked back.
November 1, 2006
“What are they doing here?”
Carly sat down next to Jax at the Metro Court bar in their restaurant, but her eyes were on a far table in the corner.
“It’s a birthday dinner for Elizabeth.”
She curled her lip in disgust. She watched Nikolas, Emily, Robin, Patrick, and a few people from the hospital laugh and talk with Elizabeth. She still couldn’t believe Elizabeth was going to make Jason a father. She was trying to figure out if there was some way Elizabeth had fixed the test, but Elizabeth wasn’t smart enough nor did she know anyone who could help so that meant it was probably true. It was a bitter pill and one she would put up with. For now.
Elizabeth answered the door herself since she was already in the living room. She smiled wide when she got it open.
“Hey, what are you doing here?”
“I wanted to wish you a happy birthday.”
“Thanks, Jason. Come on in.”
“Have a good day?”
“Yes. Cam, Mercedes and I had a picnic lunch at the park since it happened to be a warm day and my friends treated me to dinner at the Metro Court.”
“Good. I have present for you, but I’ll understand if you want to wait for it.”
Her brow wrinkled in confusion, but she was curious as well.
“What is it?”
“I talked to your doctor this afternoon and she says it’s okay if you want to go out on the bike.”
“You talked to Kelly?”
“She said to be careful, but that it’s really up to what you’re comfortable with.”
“That explains her looks and comments at dinner. I’ll be right back.”
She headed down the hall and was out of view. He wondered what she was doing, but she was back after just a couple of minutes. She went to the front closet and grabbed a jacket. He motioned for her to come closer. He took the jacket and helped her put it on.
“I guess this is a yes.”
She didn’t even have to look at him to know he was smiling at her.
“Quit laughing at me. It’s a big, fat yes.” She turned around and hugged him tightly. “Thank you.”
“Happy birthday, Elizabeth.”
Chapter 8 by lovemyqtkids
November 2, 2006
Patrick entered Kelly’s and immediately started looking for Elizabeth. He was looking around when he saw her come out of the kitchen with a couple of filled plates. She smiled at him before finishing her journey. She dropped her plates off at the table they were expected at and headed for him.
“Hey, here for lunch?”
“Can you join me?”
“Maybe. Let me run it by Bobbie.”
She went back into the kitchen while he found a table. She came back out after a minute or so and joined him. She leaned back and slid her feet up under the table onto the chair opposite her.
“They really suspended you?”
“They did. I know they had to, but it hurts knowing they couldn’t just take my word for it.”
“Do you know who did steal the drugs?”
“Yeah. I told them what I know and they’ll investigate.” She shrugged. “We’ll see.”
“And working here?”
“Like riding a bike. I can’t carry a tray of plates, but I can do single servings. I appreciate Bobbie accommodating me.”
“She likes you. We all do.”
She narrowed her eyes in fake annoyance.
“Do you want something?”
“I just want you to be alright.”
“I am or at least I’m on the way to be. I finally realized Lucky and I have been trying to re-create feelings we had when we were fifteen. It works sometimes, but we aren’t really happy.”
She regarded him thoughtfully, but her tone was firm.
“We’re friends who are having a baby.”
“I’m not going to say anything, but I reserve the right to do so at a future time if needed.”
“Fine. Now, do you need to look at the menu or do you know what you want?”
“Is it alright to sit out here for a bit?”
Cody looked around the docks.
“Let’s not stay too long, Miss Webber.”
She glared at him because of how he addressed her, but her smile showed she wasn’t really angry.
“Can do, Mr. Paul.”
She could see him hold back a smile as she lowered herself onto the bench. She closed her eyes as she listened to the water. It had been a good day, but she was worn out. She was going to sit here for a couple minutes and then head home where she would rest for the remainder of the day. She heard Cody’s voice before she heard footsteps on the other side of the dock.
She was standing before she even had her eyes open. She gripped her purse in front of her stomach as she watched Ric approach them.
“Elizabeth.” She stayed silent. “How are you?”
“I heard about the baby. Congratulations.”
She tilted her head and studied him.
“What do you want, Ric?”
“I’d like to be your friend and help. I know things aren’t good with Lucky.”
“Shouldn’t you be helping your wife who has cancer?”
He shoved his hands in his dress pants pockets and glanced at Cody.
“I don’t think she wants my help.”
“I wonder why.”
He looked at her quizzically, wondering if she knew. He dismissed that as Sam wouldn’t have told anyone about their time together.
“I appreciate your offer, but I will not be accepting.”
“But you’ll take his help?”
Her tone turned icy.
“First of all, I don’t have to explain anything to you, but I’m going to so you’re not confused.” She stopped and slid her purse strap on her shoulder. “Actually, I’m not. None of this is any of your business.”
She looked over at Cody who nodded and walked between her and Ric. He motioned for her to lead the way and he followed her up the stairs leaving Ric alone.
November 3, 2006
Jason leaned back against the elevator wall.
“I’m not sure this is necessary.”
“Jason, I don’t want there to be problems with your friends.”
He was acutely aware of Cody in the elevator with them. He knew the other man would never repeat anything he heard, but he wasn’t comfortable opening up.
“They’ll either believe me or they won’t.”
He had a feeling she knew more than he wanted her to know. She tipped up on her toes and whispered in his ear, the feeling reminding him of things he had no business remembering when he was committed to Sam.
“I don’t believe another test will have different results. This is just to prove to the world what we already know.” She lowered her heels to the floor and spoke normally. “Okay?”
He lowered his forehead to hers.
The elevator reached the parking garage and the doors opened. Jason stood up straight as Elizabeth dug around in her purse. They all stepped out as she found her wallet. She pulled out a small card.
“Before I forget, my next appointment is the week of Thanksgiving.”
He took the card and the envelope she was holding out to him.
“Thanks. I’ve got some work at the warehouse. Are you alright?”
“I’m good. I have a shift at Kelly’s in a bit so I’m going to head over early and eat first. See you later?”
He didn’t smile, but his eyes softened.
“See you later.”
He nodded to Cody before heading off to the right. She looked behind at Cody.
“Ready, Miss Webber?”
“You’re not going to call me Elizabeth, are you?”
He cracked a smile.
“I value my life, Miss Webber.”
“Ha.” She shook her head and laughed. “Whatever. Yes, let’s go.” She felt him tense before he grabbed her arm and pulled her behind him. She looked around him and tried to show no fear. “Mr. Alcazar.”
“Please call me Lorenzo.”
“No, thank you.”
“I mean you no harm.”
“Am I supposed to take your word for that?”
“Miss Webber, please give a message to—.”
Cody’s voice interrupted.
“If you are smart you’ll turn around and walk away.”
“In my business it pays to take risks.” He spoke to Elizabeth. “I’m sure we’ll see each other again, Miss Webber.” He turned to walk away, but looked back. “Oh, I almost forgot. Congratulations on your baby.”
Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed and she didn’t move. Cody was on the phone before Alcazar was out of sight. It was only minutes later Elizabeth heard the sounds of a motorcycle. Jason braked in front of them. Cody ushered her to the bike as Jason held out a helmet. Elizabeth strapped it on, threw her purse in the saddlebag and climbed on behind him.
“We’ll meet you at Kelly’s.”
Cody nodded and Jason headed for the exit.
Jason knew Elizabeth needed to go to work so he only drove around for ten minutes before pulling into a parking spot near Kelly’s. He felt her pull away to take her helmet off, but she surprised him by resting her forehead on his back.
“Did he scare you?”
“Not verbally, but I know who he is so I know to be cautious.”
She slid off the motorcycle and he took the helmet she held out.
“What did he say?”
“He said he had a message for me to give to someone. Cody cut him off before he gave a name.”
“He congratulated me on the baby.”
“Did you feel threatened?”
“No, not really. He threw it out like it was an afterthought, but I don’t think it was.”
“If he approaches you again I want you to call me immediately. I don’t trust him.”
He could tell she wanted to say something, but to her credit she didn’t.
“I don’t think he’s after me, but I will call if I see him.”
He swung his leg over the bike as he stood up. He gave her her purse after pulling it out of the saddlebag. He motioned for her to lead the way. She walked past the parking lot and into the courtyard. Cody was waiting by the door.
“Do you want to stay for lunch?” She shook her head when she remembered. “Oh, wait. You have work at the warehouse.”
There were reasons he probably shouldn’t stay, but he ignored them.
“It’s not an emergency. I can stay.”
November 7, 2006
Elizabeth was carrying empty plates back to the kitchen when she heard Cody’s voice across the room.
She heard the door open behind her, but ignored it as she entered the kitchen. She grabbed some plates that were ready to be delivered and went back into the main room. She barely glanced at Lucky and Maxie sitting at a table as she set her plates down on a table where a couple was sitting.
“Can I get you anything else right now?”
They shook their heads and she went behind the counter and grabbed a coffee pot. She circled the room asking if customers needed refills. She finally stopped at Lucky’s table.
“Aren’t you embarrassed to be back here, Elizabeth?”
Elizabeth tapped her chin with her finger.
“Aren’t you embarrassed to be pimping yourself out for drugs?” She gave him a saccharine smile. “Coffee?”
She turned on her heel and went to put the coffee pot back on the burner. Bobbie came out of the kitchen.
“You go ahead and head out. We’ll be good for the rest of the day.”
“Go. You’ve done enough today. Go rest that shoulder.”
“Thanks, Bobbie.” She went into the back office and grabbed her purse and jacket. She breezed towards the door. “Ready, Mr. Paul?”
“After you, Miss Webber.”
Once in the courtyard she turned to go left.
“Don’t get any ideas, Elizabeth.”
Elizabeth took a couple of deep breaths before turning around to deal with Carly.
“What ideas would that be?”
“Oh, please. You want Jason.”
“What I want is for you to leave me alone.”
“Not gonna happen. Go home to Lucky.”
“I care about Lucky, but he and I are over.”
“That’s fine. Stay away from Jason.”
Carly’s eyes narrowed when Elizabeth actually rolled her eyes at her.
“I know it burns you up I’ll be tied to Jason forever, but get over yourself. This is not about you.”
She turned her back on Carly and left her fuming.
November 8, 2006
Elizabeth was cutting through the park when she saw one of the other guards standing near the fountain. As she came around it she realized Sam was sitting on a bench. She knew she might be sorry, but she approached her anyway.
“Sam, are you alright?”
Sam swiped at her eyes.
“Like you care.”
“Alrighty then. I’ll see you later.”
“Wait! I’m sorry. It’s a bad day. It’s been two years since I lost my little girl.”
Elizabeth couldn’t help but feel sympathy for her. She sat down on the bench.
“I’m sorry. I can only imagine how you feel.”
“That’s right. And you also don’t know how it feels to have your boyfriend having a baby with someone else.” Sam stood up. Her tone became biting. “While I appreciate your concern I’d rather you didn’t. I’d rather not see you at all if I can help it.”
Sam stalked off.
“Well, that didn’t go well.”
“Elizabeth!” She turned at her name. “How are you?”
“Hey, Dr. Quartermaine. I’m good for the most part.”
“Are you sure? Do you need to sit down? And please, call me Monica.”
“I’m okay. I’m only worn out. Just finished my interview about the missing drugs.”
“I heard about that. I’m sorry. I don’t believe you would do that.”
“Alan and I want to congratulate you and Jason.” It looked like Monica wanted to say something else so Elizabeth waited. “We’d like you to consider letting us be in your baby’s life, but we don’t want to push.”
Elizabeth was choked up, but she managed to speak.
“I’m sure we can work something out.”

Elizabeth rushed into the Metro Court restaurant with Cody trailing behind her. She knew people were looking at her as she made her way to Nikolas and Emily but she didn’t really care.
“I’m so sorry I’m late. The meeting we had with Lucky and his lawyer did not go well. He doesn’t have a leg to stand on so him dragging this out is simple pettiness.” She sighed as she sat down. “I just want this over.”
“What does Diane say?”
“She’s confident that if we go before a judge I’ll get my judgment without issue. We just can’t get a date before December. I’m tempted to ask Jason if I can borrow his jet and go get a quickie divorce.” She narrowed her eyes at Nikolas when he opened his mouth. “Don’t start.”
“I wasn’t.” She raised her eyebrows at him. “Okay, I won’t now. I’ll talk to Lucky and see if I can get him to be reasonable.”
She hung her head before looking at them both.
“I know you want us to work things out, but it’s not going to happen. You’re going to have to live with the three musketeers now.”
Emily covered Elizabeth’s hand with her own.
“We want you happy and you aren’t going to get that with Lucky. We see that now. We support you and will do whatever we can to help you.”
“Even if you have to spend time with Jason.”
Elizabeth laughed at his lack of enthusiasm.
Diane looked at Sonny as she sat down. She looked over at Elizabeth who had just sat at a table with her friends.
“You know I can’t tell you anything, Sonny.”
“I don’t want specifics, Diane. I know Lucky can be volatile and I also know Jason wants to protect his child’s mother. Surely there’s a way you can tell him if and when Lucky becomes a problem.”
“Hopefully it won’t come to that.”
Sonny took a drink of his water and knew it would come to that because he knew Lucky Spencer.

November 14, 2006
Jason was coming down the stairs as Diane was announced and let into the penthouse.
“I want to go over a few things before we head to the District Attorney’s office.”
“Do you expect problems?”
“You and I both know despite this being a case against Lucky Spencer D.A. Lansing will try and go after you.”
“Ric is the D.A?”
“He was appointed yesterday due to Alexis’ declining health.”
“Does Elizabeth know?”
“I do not know. She probably received her summons to go over her testimony. She hasn’t contacted me. Do you think there’s a problem?”
He pulled open the closet door to grab his leather jacket.
“I need to talk to Elizabeth.”
“Unfortunately, it will have to wait until after we see Ric. You don’t want to give him any reason to arrest you.”
He bit back a response and let her lead the way.
Ric had scheduled Jason’s interview for the morning so he could schedule Elizabeth’s right before lunch. He hoped to persuade her to eat with him so he could work on his own plan to take down Jason and Sonny. Jason’s interview went as expected. He had barely given his own account of what happened on the docks with little else said. His lawyer was quick to jump in and question everything. He didn’t really care because it was just a box to check off. His secretary interrupted his thoughts when she buzzed from the front office letting him know Elizabeth had arrived. He stood as she and a man he didn’t know entered.
“He’ll have to wait outside.” The man tensed and Elizabeth looked at Ric in surprise. “Unless he’s your attorney he’ll have to wait outside.”
Ric could tell the other man didn’t want to and it burned him when he looked to Elizabeth for confirmation.
“It’s okay, Cody. I’ll be alright.”
Cody, as she called him, didn’t look convinced, but he left the office anyway. Ric pointed out the chairs in front of his desk and she went around him and sat down.
“Thanks for coming in today.”
He sat in the chair next to her instead of behind his desk. He thought he felt her unease, but it was so fleeting he figured he imagined it.
“What do you want to know?”
He frowned at her tone.
“I need to go over your statement for the trial, but first, how are you doing?”
He waited for more before realizing she wasn’t going to speak again.
“Is something wrong?”
“Ric, I just want to get this over with so can we start?”
He wanted to help her, but it was obvious he would have to ease into it.
“Sure. Let me find your statement.”
Jason let Cody into his apartment.
“How did it go today?”
“He made me wait outside.”
Jason’s hands clenched into fists.
“How long was she in there?”
“About 30 minutes.”
“How did she seem when she came out?”
“Shaken.” Cody felt the mood shift. “I assumed it was from going over her testimony until she told me some of what Ric has done.”
Jason intentionally relaxed because he needed to focus.
“Is she afraid of him?”
“She didn’t come out and say it, but after seeing her come out of his office?”
Cody didn’t finish his sentence, but he didn’t have to. Jason knew what he meant. She wouldn’t have told Cody anything if she wasn’t worried.
“You protect her and keep me informed of anything he says or does near her.”
Kelly’s was so busy Elizabeth hadn’t realized Jason had come in and sat at the counter until she was behind said counter getting napkins.
“Hey, I’ll be with you in a minute. Okay?”
He didn’t like having his back to the door or a crowd so he turned to watch the room while he waited. He saw Elizabeth go from table to table and back to the kitchen window and realized how familiar it all felt. Almost as if time had gone backwards and he and she were still those friends dancing around uncertain feelings. Until he remembered the night they spent together and they were going to be parents together. That was new and something he never expected. He wouldn’t change a thing. Well, maybe one thing, but that was a problem for another day.
“Just coffee or would you like to eat?”
“Coffee for now. Alright to join you for your dinner break?”
“It’ll be an hour or so.”
“I can wait.”
“Coffee coming up then.”
The diner was empty when Elizabeth set his usual order down in front of him and sat next to him with her own plate.
“Thanks.” They ate in silence as they dug into their food. It wasn’t long before Elizabeth pushed her plate away. She crossed her arms and leaned her elbows on the table. Jason slid his hand down her upper arm. “How’d it go with Ric?”
He watched as she tried to school her features into an expression of nonchalance but her eyes watered.
“Innocent enough, but the parallels terrify me.”
His hand then covered hers and he gently squeezed when he realized she was trembling. His voice was low and fervent.
“Talk to me.”
“Of Ric?” She nodded. “Did he do or say something?”
“It’s not what he did or said. It’s just a feeling. Things are apparently breaking up with Alexis and I think he wants to…” She trailed off, not wanting to finish that sentence. He didn’t want her to finish it, either. “We both know he hates you more than Sonny and you remember how he tried to punish him.”
He stroked the back of her hand.
“I won’t let him hurt either of you. I promise you that.”
November 20, 2006
Elizabeth was surprised to see Sam sitting next to Jason in Dr. Lee’s waiting room, but didn’t comment. She went to the window to check in before joining them in the corner.
“You beat me here.”
Jason matched her light-hearted tone.
“Finished things up quicker than expected this morning.”
She figured she could be polite no matter how the woman acted the last time they’d seen each other.
Jason frowned at her tone, but focused on Elizabeth.
“Anything I need to know?”
“They’ll take me back to check my vitals and then you can come back for the appointment with Kelly.”
He nodded. She tried to ignore Sam’s eye rolling in the corner. Thankfully it wasn’t long before she was called back. When she was done they put her in a room and went to get Jason. She was confused at his tense expression when he showed up in the doorway until she realized Sam was behind him. She gave him a look of sympathy before pointing out the chairs he and Sam could use. It was only a moment before Kelly came in. Her eyes widened at the occupants of the room, but she kept it professional.
“Blood pressure, weight and proteins levels are all good. We’ll do a heartbeat check and measure your belly, but the ultrasound will have to wait until next time. We may have an emergency delivery soon and I want to be available.”
Elizabeth slid her shirt up to the bottom of her bra. Kelly pulled out a fabric tape measure and measured from top to bottom of Elizabeth’s stomach and wrote in her chart. She then picked up the portable fetal heart monitor and swiped the wand back and forth on Elizabeth stomach looking for the best spot to listen. It wasn’t long before the speedy swish swish was heard. Elizabeth looked over at Jason and found him watching her. No words were needed.
“Baby sounds good. Heartbeat is strong in the 150s. As long as you have an uneventful month we’ll see you back here after Christmas.” Kelly looked at Jason while Elizabeth pulled her shirt back down. “Any questions?”
“Not right now.”
“Any questions for you, Elizabeth?”
“No, I’m good.”
“Okay.” Sam huffed and crossed her arms. “We’re all done. Just have the nurse schedule you around your 20 week mark and we’ll get you that ultrasound.”
Jason held the door open for them and Sam rushed out leaving them all behind.
November 24, 2006
Jason stopped short when he saw them. Elizabeth was pushing Cameron on the swings. He wasn’t going high, but Jason could hear his laugh even where he was. He walked over to them. Elizabeth grinned at him when she realized he was there and, like always, it tightened something in his chest.
Jason smiled at Cameron’s enthusiastic greeting.
“Hi. Having fun?”
“Looks like fun. Why don’t you let me push for a bit?”
She raised her eyebrows.
“Are you saying I look tired?”
“Do I look stupid to you?” He was not going to laugh. “I’m only giving your shoulder a break.”
“Mm-hmm.” She laughed and sat in the swing next to Cameron. She twisted it towards them. “Did you have a good Thanksgiving?”
“The usual. Ate with Sonny, Carly, and the boys. And Sam. What about you?”
“I invited everyone to my apartment. Robin and Patrick, Nikolas and Emily, and Nadine.”
He was aware of the little boy he was pushing.
“No.” She turned back to the front and pushed off with one foot gently. “She has very adamant opinions of our situation so I told her not to contact us anymore.”
For a little while the only noise was the metal chains rubbing each other as they swung.
“I’m sorry, too, Jason, but I’m not sorry about this baby so she can just suck it.” She knew she’d shocked him which made her laugh for some reason. “We came to an impasse and it hurts that Audrey will not know my children, but I’d rather it be her than you not knowing your child.”
She looked at him with her chin raised and he knew better than to argue with her.
Jason barely shut the penthouse door behind him before someone was pounding on it. He opened it and found Sam on the other side. He moved back barely in time before she stalked in. He shut the door again and turned to face her.
“I saw you, Jason. I saw you with her.”
He knew by her tone who she was talking to and he bristled at her attitude.
“I saw you and Elizabeth in the park. How did she get you to play Daddy to Cam? Did she say she was tired? Did she cry about what a loser Lucky is? Why do you give her the satisfaction, Jason? Do you have any idea how much you hurt me every time you spend time with her? Something has to give.”
He leaned on the edge of the desk and watched her storm back and forth in front of the fireplace.
“I know this situation isn’t easy and I’ve tried to be patient and give you time, but things aren’t getting better.” She stopped moving. “I was hoping by including you in appointments you would feel better, but you continue to treat Elizabeth terribly. You and Carly spent all Thanksgiving complaining about how she ruined your life.” He sighed. “I think we have to admit we aren’t the people we were before that night. I’m sorry this will hurt you, but it’s over.”
He turned and left. He gave instructions to her guard in the hall but had no plans to return until she was gone.
Chapter 10 by lovemyqtkids
November 28, 2006
Elizabeth was just dozing off when she felt her legs lift. She cracked her eyes open to see Jason sitting down and she felt her legs lowered onto his lap. She started to sit up when she was fully awake, but stopped mid-movement when Jason started rubbing the arch of her right foot.
“You don’t have to do that…but don’t stop.”
“I called you five minutes ago and yet you’re falling asleep before I get here.”
“Blame your kid.” He just shook his head and smiled never stopping his ministrations. “I’m kidding. Partly.” She closed her eyes and smiled. “Pregnancy and a good day’s work wears a girl out.”
His hands stopped moving and she opened her eyes.
“You won’t overdo?”
She sat up and put her hand on his forearm.
“I won’t. I promise.”
“So how is it being at Kelly’s again?”
“Weird.” Then she chuckled. “But it’s good. It’s much easier when you know what you’re doing.”
“Do you like it better than the hospital?”
She gave him a side look.
“Why do you ask?”
“I have a suggestion and I’d like you to think about it before shooting me down.”
“You make me sound unreasonable.”
“Hey now.” She grinned but kept quiet so he continued. “I know you became a nurse to provide for Cameron, but I know it wasn’t your first choice. Not that Kelly’s is either.” He shook his head. “What I’m trying to say is if you want to stay at Kelly’s or even look for something else entirely different don’t let not having medical insurance stop you. Please let me help.”
She shifted suddenly on her knees. She grasped his face gently between her hands. Her eyes teared. Her voice was hushed. She brushed her mouth against his before pulling back.
“You are so good to me.” She realized what she had done and covered her mouth with her hand. “I’m so sorry. That was not appropriate.”
His voice was quick.
“Hey. It’s okay.”
“No, it’s not. You and Sam are trying again. I don’t want to mess that up for you.”
“I’m not with Sam anymore. We’re just not the same people we used to be.”
“Oh. I know you love her. I’m sorry.”
“I used to, but I was trying to hold onto something we lost months ago.”
She untucked her legs and curled up next to him.
“I know what that’s like.” They sat there in silence, neither uncomfortable or in a rush. Soon though she knew she had to respond to his offer. “You and I both know I don’t like needing help from anyone, but I promise I will consider it.”
He nodded, knowing that was enough for now.
November 30, 2006
Emily was walking across the docks to get to the launch when she saw Elizabeth sitting on a bench. She changed course and headed for her friend.
Elizabeth stood up and hugged Emily.
“Are you okay? Aren’t you cold out here?”
They sat down.
“A little. I’m on my way home. Just stopped for a couple minutes to think.”
“My suspension has been lifted.”
“That’s good news.” She looked at Elizabeth closely. “Isn’t it?”
“Sure. But they did inform me I’m not really cleared because they couldn’t prove anything, either against me or Maxie. There will be a note in my file.”
“So when do you go back?”
Elizabeth looked out across the water.
“I don’t know if I want to.”
“Oh.” She made sure Elizabeth was looking at her before smiling. “Tips that good at Kelly’s?”
“Probably not, but I like it there. And I get more time with Cameron.”
“You know we’ll help you if you decide to stay.”
“I know, but I don’t like needing help.”
Emily wrapped her arm around Elizabeth’s shoulders.
“I know you don’t, but we love you and want to help.” She paused. “You know who will also be willing to help.”
Elizabeth couldn’t help but chuckle.
“You can say his name.”
“Alright, you know Jason will also be willing to help.”
“Yes, I know.” She looked at Emily who was giving her a knowing glance. “I do know that. He’s already offered.”
Emily looked down at her phone when it buzzed.
“Okay, I’ve got to run. Let me know what you decide and don’t forget. I support you no matter what.”
December 1, 2006
Elizabeth stuck her hands deeper into her coat pocket as she walked down the sidewalk. She was hoping to cross a couple things off her Christmas list before the season got too busy. She almost turned around when she saw Carly headed her way, but realized she had already been spotted so she stopped and waited. She braced herself for whatever Carly might have to say this time, but it was a voice behind her that was unexpected.
“Cody Paul?” Elizabeth turned to see Ric and a couple of uniformed policemen standing there. She did not like the expression on his face, especially when he continued talking. “I need you to come downtown with me for questioning.”
Cody angled himself to block Ric’s view of Elizabeth who was pulling out her phone.
“Questioning for what?”
“We have some questions regarding the theft of narcotics at General Hospital.”
Elizabeth knew Ric had no case as the theft happened months before Cody was guarding her, but she kept her mouth shut. Cody spoke to her without turning around.
“Call Jason for another guard and stay with Max until he gets here.”
She turned to make sure Max was close as she pushed the button that dialed Jason’s phone. While it rang she watched the two officers lead Cody away. She didn’t want to deal with Ric who stayed behind so she focused on her call.
“Elizabeth? Are you okay?”
“I’m good, but I’m going to need another guard. Ric just took Cody in for questioning.”
She could hear the concern in his voice.
“Are you alone?”
“No, we ran into Carly and Max. Cody told me to stay with Max and call you.”
She could hear his relief.
“Good. Where are you?”
“Do you know those new little boutiques down by the renovated waterfront?”
“Yes. We bought a new warehouse behind them. I’ll be there soon.”
But she realized he had hung up so she put her phone away.
“I’d be happy to walk you to your car, Elizabeth.”
“No, thank you, Ric. I’ll be waiting with Max.”
She heard Carly huff behind her, but she didn’t care. She was told to wait with Max and she didn’t want to be alone with Ric so she would put up with Carly’s attitude. Her breath caught as Ric edged closer. He implored her.
“Come on, Elizabeth. Let me help you.”
“No, Ric. You have a sick wife and a little girl who needs you. Go help them.”
She put her hands out to ward him off.
“Back off, Ric. I don’t need help, least of all from you.”
“You heard her, Ric. It may have taken her way too long, but she has seen the light. You want me to tell Jason you won’t leave the mother of his child alone?”
As Elizabeth stepped back from him the glass front window behind them shattered. She felt herself thrown to the ground and people around them were screaming. Her head ached as her temple came into contact with the sidewalk. She moaned and felt gentle hands on her back. She frowned when she thought she heard Carly’s concerned voice. That didn’t sound right.
“Elizabeth? Are you awake? Can you sit up or do you need help?” Then came the tone Elizabeth was familiar with as Carly helped her sit up against the outside wall. “Back off, Ric. She doesn’t need your help. Max, do you see anything?” Carly had found some tissues in her purse and was dabbing at the cut on Elizabeth’s forehead. “Elizabeth, hold this right here.” Elizabeth held the tissues against her wound. “Are you hurt anywhere besides your head? How’s the baby? Any pain?”
“Carly, I think…I think I’m….okay.”
“Elizabeth, please let me help you.”
Elizabeth closed her eyes trying to make sense of things. She could heard Carly and Ric arguing, but couldn’t understand their words. She felt everything change and knew Jason had arrived. She released a breath knowing things would be okay now. She opened her eyes when she felt his hand cup her face and his thumb stroke her cheek.
She felt like she was slow to answer.
“I’m going to help you up and then we’re going to get you checked out at the hospital.”
“Do I have to?”
He helped her stand and she bit back nausea from moving too quickly when Jason easily picked her up and held her close.
She closed her eyes as Jason took her to the car.
Patrick was waiting for them as soon as they entered the Emergency Room.
“How is she?”
“She hit her head when she went down.”
“I’m not sure. I wasn’t there.”
“Okay, bring her into Cubicle One and we’ll check her for a concussion and get an ultrasound machine down here.”
Jason laid her down on the table and stepped back to give Patrick some room. Elizabeth whimpered.
“You can stay on the other side of the bed, Jason.” Jason didn’t argue or respond to Patrick as he moved around the bed. He rolled the stool closer to the bed and sat down. He stroked her hair back gently carefully avoiding her wound. “Elizabeth, I need you to answer a couple of questions for me while I clean your head.”
Her voice was small.
“Do you know where you are?”
“Who brought you in?”
“How old is Cam?”
“Good. We’re going to do an ultrasound to check on your baby and then we’ll do some tests. How are you feeling?”
“My head hurts.”
“Any pain elsewhere?”
“Good. Hold on a minute while I go find out what the hold up is on that machine.”
She looked at Jason once Patrick was gone.
“Feels a little like deja vu.”
“Yeah. Let’s not do this again, okay?”
“No kidding.” She sobered. “What happened?”
“I don’t know yet, but I will find out.”
“Thankfully, all you seem to have is a mild concussion. I’d like someone to be checking on you throughout tonight and I want you to take it easy for a couple of days before going back to work. The baby is good right now and we want to keep it that way.”
“Call you if you need anything. I’m going to get your paperwork ready.”
“Thank you, Patrick.
He left, leaving Elizabeth and Jason alone.
“Good thing I have Mercedes.” Her brow wrinkled. “But how will she take care of Cam if she’s up with me during the night?”
“How about I check on you and she can sleep and keep an eye on him tomorrow?”
“I want to help.”
“Okay. Thanks, Jason.”
Ric was seething. He had planned it all out so precisely. He had shown up where Elizabeth was shopping and had her guard taken away. He offered to stay with her. He was supposed to be the hero when the shooting started. But no, Jason had to ruin it all by saving the day. Again. Of course, it didn’t help that Elizabeth would not accept his help or concern. Maybe he should change tactics. Instead of trying to help her or scare her into letting him help her he should put himself in harm’s way and get her to help him. She never could stand to see anyone hurt. His thoughts were interrupted by a knock on his front door. Alcazar didn’t wait to be invited in once the door was open. He turned to face him once he closed the door.
“I’m going to guess you pulled that little stunt today with Miss Webber. You do what you want, but let me be clear. If you do anything to jeopardize me taking down Corinthos and Morgan you won’t live to regret it.”
“Jason, I’m fine.”
“We had a deal.”
“Whose idea was that?”
“Yours. If I had my way you wouldn’t walk at all.”
She rolled her eyes while smiling.
“I’m still thinking you cheated.”
She climbed out of the car and let Jason scoop her up into his arms. He chuckled.
“How can I cheat when you made the deal?”
He started walking to the elevators that were in the Harborview Towers parking garage.
“The deal was I walk to the car and you carry me from the car, but I had to ride a wheelchair to the door of the hospital and your car was waiting for me right outside. I think I walked 30 steps.”
He stepped onto the elevator and she pushed the button for her floor.
“It’s not my fault if you’re unhappy with the deal you came up with. A deal’s a deal.”
She smacked his chest, but there was little power behind it.
“Sure, sure. I’m making more conditions next time.”
“You do that.”
He was still smiling when they got off the elevator. Cody opened the door for them and Jason set her on the couch carefully.
“I’m not made of glass.”
He leaned over and put his nose inches from hers.
“I know, but I’m still going to be careful with you.”
Chapter 11 by lovemyqtkids
December 1, 2006
Jason got a quick summary from Elizabeth before leaving her to play with Cameron and Mercedes. He left to see what he could find out about the shooting but he stopped outside her door first to see Cody.
“How did it go?”
“Diane met me there. Your doing?” Jason nodded. “I was out in ten minutes.”
“Ric is playing games. I don’t know if he’s trying to distract me by going after Elizabeth through Lucky’s case or if it’s more.”
“I won’t let him near her.”
“I know. I’m going to send Marc down to watch the door so you can be in on the investigation.”
Jason hugged Carly once he entered his penthouse.
“Thanks for coming. You alright?”
“I’m good. How’s Elizabeth and the baby?”
“They’re good. Home now. Thanks for helping her.”
“Please. I’m not going to let anything happen to your baby if I can help it.”
“Can you tell me what happened?”
She dropped onto the couch.
“Not much to tell. I was annoyed when we came across Elizabeth. Ric was harassing her when the glass window behind us shattered. Max got us to the ground. We realized Elizabeth was bleeding. I tried to help her while dealing with Ric. Then you showed up.”
“Thanks. That’s pretty much what Elizabeth remembers, too. I’m putting an extra guard on you and her until we know who it was. Don’t give me that look. It’s only temporary.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Fine.” She stood up and picked her purse up off the desk. “I’m sorry, but I’ve got to run.”
“Thanks for your help.”
She kissed his cheek.
“Anything for you.”
“What do we know?”
“The shots came from the roof of the building right across the street. Stan is checking nearby security cameras to see if he can get a visual on the shooter. Did you see anything, Max?”
“I’m sorry, Jason. I was watching Miss Webber and Lansing. I don’t trust the guy.”
“It’s okay. Always protect them first. Let me know as soon as you get something.”
“What are you doing?”
She didn’t even look up from what she was doing. Her voice was all innocence. She pointed her knife at him before going back to chopping.
“What do you mean?” She cocked her head to the side and gave him a cheeky grin. “Be careful with your words, Morgan.”
“What can I do to help?”
“Acceptable. You can get a pizza out of the freezer and put it in the oven.” She sighed and turned to face him. “This is something I can do despite having a concussion so I’m doing it. It’s just a salad to go with frozen pizza.”
He took a step closer after setting the timer.
“I know you can take care of yourself and that’s partly because you’ve had to, but we’re friends and I want to help you. And yes, I might be a little overprotective at times. ”
“I can’t be mad at you for wanting me to be safe.” She finished up the salad just as the timer went off. “Why don’t you grab that and put the next one in while I go get Cam and Mercedes?”
Elizabeth groaned and struggled to sit up.
“What is it, Cam?”
She heard chuckling but it didn’t sound right.
“I said I need you to wake up.”
As the last of sleep faded away she realized it was Jason, not Cam, she was talking to.
“Do you know who I am?”
“Yeah, the guy who won’t let me sleep.”
“Funny. You can sleep now. I’ll be back later.”
He helped her lay back down. He headed for the door.
“Hey, Jason?” He looked back. “Thanks.”
The slight noise down the hall woke Jason. He got up from the couch and headed for it. He peeked into Elizabeth’s room and saw the bed was empty and the bathroom light on under the closed door. The bathroom door opened a few seconds later and he saw Elizabeth stop after stepping into the room.
“Yeah, it’s me. I heard something and came to check.”
She motioned him closer as she moved back to the bed.
“Sorry. My bladder called, but I’m glad you’re here. I want to show you something.” She turned the little lamp by the bed on as she climbed back into bed. She motioned him to sit next to her. “This may not be enough light, but look.” His eyes widened in surprise when she lifted her shirt to show off her midsection. He looked intently not sure what he was looking for when he realized she had a rounded stomach. He didn’t realize she was looking at his face, not her stomach, until she laughed lightly. “It’s our baby, Jason.”
Her breath caught at the look in his eyes when he finally looked up at her. Before he could speak they heard light footsteps in the hallway. Jason was off the bed as soon as Cameron came into view.
“You alright, buddy?”
Cameron shook his head. Jason picked him up.
“Come here, baby.” Jason carried him to the bed and sat back down. Elizabeth reached for Cameron and he went to her, but he didn’t let go of Jason’s shirt. The little boy yawned. “Let go of Jason, Cam.”
“It’s okay. Hey, Cam, I’m tired. Want to lay down with me?”
Cameron nodded and laid down between them. Elizabeth laid down on the other side and tried to hide a yawn herself.
Her eyes drifted shut and he knew she wouldn't hear his answer, but he spoke anyway.
December 2, 2006
Jason was already awake and drinking coffee when he heard the sound of someone running down the hall. Cameron came running around the corner and full speed towards Jason when he saw him. He plopped his arms on Jason’s leg.
Jason smiled back.
“Mama make pancakes. Want some?”
Both of their faces looked back to the hall when they heard Elizabeth and Mercedes talking. They came into view. Elizabeth smiled.
“I see you found Jason.” Cameron just giggled. She smiled again and spoke to Jason. “I’ve finally convinced Mercedes she can take her day off and we’ll be just fine.” She gave Jason a look that said he’d better not argue with her. “It was just a mild concussion.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
Cameron hugged Mercedes and then ran into the kitchen while yelling about pancakes. She said goodbye and left.
“I know you don’t eat breakfast, but you’re welcome to stay.”
He stood up and moved closer to her.
“I’ll have you know I can make a mean pancake.”
“So, you’re not just limited to omelets?”
He snaked a hand behind her back and bumped her closer.
“Hey now, you promised not to speak about that.”
She tried to look contrite, but wasn’t succeeding. Her phone rang and he left her pull away. He headed for the kitchen and she went for her phone. Cameron was playing with plastic containers from the cabinet next to the dishwasher.
“Hey, Cam. Want to help me make pancakes?”
Cameron cheered. Jason found the mix and measuring cups. He helped Cameron fill the cup and pour it into the bowl. They both took turns mixing. Jason got out the griddle and turned it on. It was only a couple minutes before he had a row of circle shaped batter cooking. Elizabeth’s voice interrupted them.
“Wow, you weren’t kidding. You do know how to cook pancakes.”
“Don’t make me make you disappear.”
Cameron’s eyes widened.
“Yeah, Jason. Like magic?”
Jason smiled, but ignored Elizabeth’s laughing voice and looked down at Cameron.
“Kind of like magic, but I won’t really do it. I’d miss your mom too much.”
December 3, 2006
“Still no luck?”
Jason’s voice was angry and frustrated.
“A little. We’ve got a trail leading to the shooter, but no name or photo yet. Someone is covering his tracks. Stan is having to chase a lot of rabbit holes trying to figure out who the shooter was and who hired him.”
Sonny set his glass down after drinking some water.
“We will find whoever it was and they won’t hurt anyone ever again.”
“It’s different this time.”
“I know. It’s never been your own family before.”
December 4, 2006
“I don’t think I told you yet.”
Jason was holding the door to Kelly’s open for her and she hurried inside. She turned to face him as she slid out of her coat as he followed her inside. She slung it over one arm as they headed to the counter. She placed it on the back of the stool as she stepped up to sit. He sat on the stool next to her. She picked up the mug in front of her and showed it to Cody who was near the door. He nodded and she looked back at Jason.
“Told me what?”
“I’ve decided to give my two weeks notice at the hospital.”
“How are you feeling?”
Georgie stopped in front of them.
“Would you like something to drink?”
“Yes, please. I’d like orange juice, water, and a coffee for my friend by the door.”
“I’ll take a coffee, too.”
Georgie finished writing.
“I’ll be right back.”
“Thanks, Georgie.” Elizabeth waited until Georgie had brought their drinks before answering Jason’s question. “I’m good. It was nice helping people, but nursing was never my dream. This job is easier right now so we’ll have a baby and then see.”
“Elizabeth!” They both looked up and over as Bobbie came out of the kitchen. “How are you?”
“I’m good. We just got done with my follow up and we got a clean bill of health.”
“Great. Why don’t you take tomorrow and come back on Wednesday?”
“I’m fine, Bobbie.”
“Take tomorrow and I’ll see you on Wednesday.”
Elizabeth rolled her eyes, but smiled.
“Fine. I’ll see you then.”
There was a commotion at the door and they both turned to look. They watched Robin and Emily rush towards them. Elizabeth was concerned there was a problem until she noticed their faces.
“We’re on our break so we can’t stay long. Show us.”
Elizabeth looked at Jason and shared his confusion.
“We need to look at you.”
Elizabeth was still confused, but listened to Emily and slid off the stool.
“You do have a baby bump.”
“Why didn’t you tell us? Why did we have to hear it from Kelly?”
Elizabeth couldn't help but laugh.
“I just realized it a couple days ago.”
“It makes it so real, Elizabeth. I’m going to be an aunt!”
“Okay, we’ve got to run. But still, so exciting!”
They left as quickly as they came. Elizabeth’s mouth dropped open when they didn’t come back. She looked at Cody.
“Are they really gone?” He took a quick look at the courtyard and nodded. She looked at Jason and laughed. “Goofballs.”
“They’re your friends.”
“What? She’s your sister.”
She shrugged and grinned.
Elizabeth and Jason had just entered the lobby when they noticed a large crate near the front desk. Two guards were waiting with it.
“Mr. Morgan, this came for Miss Webber.”
Jason caught Elizabeth’s gaze.
“I haven’t ordered anything.”
“Scans came up negative so it should be safe to open. Would you like us to take it upstairs, Miss Webber?”
She shook her head.
“Let’s just open it here.”
The guard left and came back with a crowbar. He pried on each edge of the top piece of wood before putting the crowbar down. He and the other guard picked up the lid and pulled it away. Elizabeth gasped as she peered over the side. She put her hand on her stomach and willed her lunch to stay where it was. The front doors banged open as she came to terms with what was in the crate. Elizabeth closed her eyes when she heard the voice behind her.
“We have some questions about last week’s shooting, Elizabeth.”
She looked up at Jason. He nodded the slightest bit. She motioned to the crate.
“I think this will answer your questions, Mac.” He looked over the side and saw two bodies. He didn’t recognize the first man, but the note pinned to his shirt labeled him as ‘the shooter.’ His eyes widened when he realized the second man was Ric Lansing. The note pinned to his suit jacket said he paid for the shooter. “We just got back from lunch and this crate was addressed to me. It was too big for me to want upstairs so we opened it up just before you came in.”
“This is now a crime scene. You may go upstairs, but I will have questions for both of you once we’re done here.”
Jason guided Elizabeth onto the elevator. She leaned back against the wall once the door closed.
“Are you okay?”
Her breath caught.
“I’m a little relieved.” She started blinking quickly to keep the tears at bay. “Does that make me a bad person?”
Jason’s voice was low and he moved closer.
“No, it doesn’t.”
She bent over as the sobs came. He ran a hand down her back. She straightened as he tugged her to him. He wrapped his arms around her as she cried.
“I am so relieved.”

December 5, 2006
“I’m sorry, Elizabeth. I know today hasn’t been good seeing as we’ve already been to the station to give your statement, but hopefully we can get this divorce taken care of.”
Elizabeth was sitting next to Diane on a bench in the courthouse hallway.
“I don’t know what you did, Diane, but thank you.”
“It was my pleasure, Elizabeth. If there’s one thing I pride myself on it’s doing a good job. Lucky Spencer will not be a problem for you much longer.”
Elizabeth blew a breath out slowly and tried to calm her nerves. They both looked to the end of the hallway when they heard Lucky’s voice getting louder. Elizabeth’s mouth fell open and Diane stood up when they saw Lucky’s attorney.
“Yes, Elizabeth. I’m sorry we’re on opposite sides, but I am Lucky’s new attorney.”
Diane’s voice was clipped.
“Since when, Ms. Davis?”
“Since yesterday. I will be filing a continuance so I can get caught up.”
“You can’t do that!”
“Elizabeth, it’s only fair.”
Elizabeth stood up and spoke deliberately.
“Fair? I have been trying to finish this up for over a month but Lucky continues to drag his heels. If it’s not one thing it’s another. You’d think it’d be easier for a woman to divorce the husband who shot her.” Her voice began to rise. “I want out, Alexis, and you’re not going to stop me.”
Diane reached out and put her hand on Elizabeth’s arm who quieted immediately.
“Your client is stalling, Alexis. We’ll see you inside.”
Jason smiled at Mercedes when she answered the door but quickly gave his attention to Cameron who ran full tilt at him. He knelt down and caught the little boy who jumped in his arms. He could hear loud noises coming from the kitchen, but listened to Cameron’s story about his trip to the library.
“I’ll go check on your mom and dinner while you go get your books, okay?”
Cameron hollered in agreement as he ran down the hallway to his room. Jason stood up and ventured towards the kitchen although he noticed all the Christmas decorations that weren’t up the day before. He paused in the doorway and leaned against the doorway when he realized Elizabeth was muttering to herself as she banged things around. He was startled out of watching her when she spoke to him.
“When did you decorate?”
“Your sister and her boyfriend came over last night with all those decorations and the tree. I think they wanted to take my mind off of Ric.” She pulled him further into the kitchen. “Don’t stand right there, Jason! With our luck Emily will come back just in time and make you kiss me because of that stupid tradition. No need to pressure you like that. Seriously. You’d think she knows better.”
He looked up and saw what he assumed to be mistletoe hanging in the doorway as he let her lead him. If she hadn’t been upset he would have stayed in the doorway just to tease her, but he could tell now wasn’t the time.
“What’s wrong? What happened?”
She threw her dishrag on the counter.
He had his own thoughts about Lucky and none of them were positive.
“How did he stall now?”
“He got a new lawyer and get this. It’s Alexis.” She saw his eyes widen. “Yeah, that’s not a conflict of interest.” She sighed. “The judge only gave her forty-eight hours to get caught up so hopefully we’ll be finished before the weekend, but it just feels like forever already.” She noticed his scowl. “Trust me. No one wants this over more than me. We’re almost there.”
“Jason! I found my books.”
Cameron ran into the kitchen dragging a lumpy cloth bag. Jason crouched down and picked Cameron and the bag up.
“You guys go read while I cook dinner.”
“Elizabeth, let’s order in. My treat tonight.”
He smiled back.
December 6, 2006
“Shaken, but she’s doing alright. The cops have left her alone after talking to her yesterday and she insisted on going back to work today.”
“Couldn’t convince her to stay home?”
“Don’t laugh at me, Sonny. She’s been through a lot.”
“That’s right. She has and she’s managed to get through it all. She’s tough and she’ll be fine. Besides, she has you.”
Jason’s head whipped up.
“Of course she does. We’re friends.”
Sonny’s gaze spoke volumes.
“I know that and I’m sure she does, too. However, does she know you love her?”
Elizabeth’s voice showed her confusion.
“What are you guys doing here?”
Elizabeth stepped back and let Emily and Nikolas into her apartment.
“We brought more decorations.”
She swung her arm out in a wide arc.
“You don’t think you brought enough decorations yesterday? And the day before?”
Emily hugged her tightly before pulling back to look at her.
“How are you doing?”
“Same as the last time you asked. I’m not quite sure how to feel about it. I’m a little sad because people are dead, but there’s also relief because I don’t have to worry about Ric anymore. It’s been an emotional forty-eight hours.”
“I bet, but you don’t have to handle this alone, Elizabeth. We’re your friends.”
“I know and I appreciate it. I’m not trying to handle things alone. I’m just getting my bearings.”
“Okay, no more scolding. How are things with Lucky? Is he still giving you problems?”
“He’s been keeping his distance. Probably a good idea since he now has Alexis as his lawyer.”
“Oh yeah. They walked into court yesterday wanting a delay. I thought I was going to take him down right there, but I held back since the judge only gave them until tomorrow to be prepared. If they get it delayed again I’m getting a Dominican Republic divorce. I only have to wait for Cam’s passport to arrive. This is his last chance to be mature and then I’m done.”
Jason stared at Sonny. He took a deep breath and shook his head.
Sonny smiled, but kept from chuckling.
“Jason, you and I have been friends for a long time and you’ve known her almost that long. It’s taken me awhile, but I recognize the signs.”
“I just broke up with Sam.”
“That just means you’re honorable. You don’t want to give her false hope. It would be worse in the long run, but that doesn’t mean you can’t or don’t have feelings for Elizabeth. I’m guessing it wouldn’t be the first time.”
“No, it wouldn’t.”
Jason knocked and was announced into Elizabeth’s apartment. He was putting his phone away as he spoke.
“Sorry I’m so…”
He trailed off as he noticed the room. Elizabeth chuckled from the couch.
“Yes, there are even more decorations today than there were when you were here last.”
“Your sister. They’ve come by every day this week. If they show up tomorrow I’m not letting them in.” Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Are you laughing at me?”
He smiled as he sat down next to her.
“No. I’m just surprised a Christmas lover like you thinks this is too much.”
She nudged him with her elbow.
“Everyone has their limits, Jason. I mean, really. Does every doorway need mistletoe?”
“Come with me.” She slid off the couch and stood up. He followed her down the hallway and was a little thrown when he realized she had taken him to her bedroom. She stopped in front of a door. “Open it.” He stared at her for a moment before opening it. He peeked inside and noticed her clothes hanging inside. He looked back and she pointed up. When his eyes reached the doorframe he did indeed find mistletoe attached to the top.
She poked him when she heard laughter in his voice.
“Every doorway. Closets, bathroom, even the pantry.”
“That’s a lot of mistletoe.”
“Yeah, wasted mistletoe.”
She didn’t realize she just waved a red flag. His brow furrowed.
“Elizabeth, what’s that?”
He pointed up to the far side of the doorway trim. She couldn’t see so she stepped closer meeting him in the small space.
“What do you see?”
And with that he kissed her.
“The police have no leads.”
“Do you want me to fabricate some to connect the Dastardly DA’s death to the coffee don?”
“Not necessary, Mr. Spinelli. This won’t be a fair fight, but I want it to be sporting.”
“Yes, sir, Mr. Alcazar, sir.”
December 7, 2006
Jason was surprised when Milo announced Elizabeth was there to see him at work. He stood up and came around his desk as she cleared the doorway. She thanked Milo as he shut the door. His eyes narrowed as she threw her purse in a chair and angrily pulled off her coat throwing it on the chair as well. He was alarmed when he saw the fear in her eyes.
“He wants Cam.”
He didn’t even hesitate as he pulled her to him and wrapped his arms around her.
“He’s not going to get him.” He waited as her breathing calmed and her body quit shaking. “What happened?”
She pulled back so that they were just holding hands.
“The hearing went as well as could be expected until the end. The judge asked if there was anything else before he ruled. Alexis had a few objections, but the judge overruled her and then she said Lucky wanted to file for custody. I think Diane might have been angrier than I was. She argued back and forth, but the judge refused to make a ruling today. We have another hearing next week.” She sighed. “So, I’m not married, but we won’t be free of him until next week, at least.”
He stroked her cheek with his right hand.
“He’s not going to get Cameron. I promise you that.”
December 8, 2006
Jason’s eyes narrowed as he entered Kelly’s and saw Lucky sitting at the far end of the counter. Lucky was staring through the service window into the kitchen. Jason wondered what he was looking at until he realized Cody was standing outside the kitchen door which meant Elizabeth was in the kitchen. He relaxed a little bit when he heard her laugh come through the window. He tensed however when he saw Lucky smile at her laugh as well. Jason ignored Lucky and headed for Cody. Bobbie happened to come out of the kitchen as he reached the doorway.
“Mind if I go back?”
Bobbie looked up at him knowingly.
“Go right ahead.” She jerked her head just a little towards Lucky. “Probably better to talk to her back there anyway.”
He nodded at Cody and entered the kitchen. He could hear Bobbie and Lucky arguing out front, but he ignored them. He didn’t pay much attention to the others as he headed all the way to the back. He stopped and simply watched her load the industrial dishwasher and turn it on. She was about to grab a dirty pot and put it in the soapy water in front of her when she noticed him.
“Hey.” She gave him a full smile. “What brings you by?”
“Coffee. I was working at the warehouse and thought I’d take a break and get a drink.”
“You want me to grab you some?”
“It can wait.”
She motioned him closer while she began to wash.
“Do you have a few minutes? It’s almost my break.”
“I’ve got time.”
A comfortable silence surrounded them while she finished the last of the dishes that were stacked there. She dried her hands and put her hand out. He put his hand in hers and she led him to the small hallway that housed Bobbie’s office and the door to the alley. She turned to face him so he leaned against the wall.
“I thought of something the other day.”
“We don’t need mistletoe.”
This time she kissed him.
December 10, 2006
Jason rubbed his hands up and down his face a few times. Another shipment had disappeared and they were no closer to finding out who took it or where it went. He wondered if it was time to look for another computer expert to help Stan keep up with their regular off the books activities so Stan could specifically focus on finding out who was sabotaging them. He picked up his phone on the first ring.
“Mr. Morgan, this is Mark down at the warehouse. The police just got here with a warrant.”
“Alright, don’t say anything. I’m on my way.” He hung up and made another call as he opened the door. The call was picked up. He spoke into the phone. “One second.” He looked at Milo. “Call Sonny and tell him the warehouse is being raided.” He turned his attention back to the phone. “Sorry about that.”
“It’s okay. Are you alright?”
“I’m fine, but I’m going to miss dinner with Cam. I’m sorry.”
“Jason, it’ll be okay. It’s not like he’ll hold a grudge. He’s two.”
He knew she was teasing him and he wanted to smile.
“I’ll try and make breakfast if that’s alright.”
“We’d love to have you. Jason?”
Jason pushed a few papers over on the desk and leaned on the corner of it. He looked around the messy room and knew he wasn’t the only one tired. He took a deep breath and waited for Sonny to speak.
“Stan, you check every call and email into the PCPD and see if we can find out who sent the police our way. My guess is Alcazar, but I want to be sure before we retaliate. I want the rest of you to keep your eyes and ears open, talk to the guys and see if anyone seems suspicious. I want to make sure we don’t have a problem within our own organization.” Sonny looked around the room. “Go home and get some rest. We’ll start this in the morning.”
Jason caught Sonny’s unspoken request to stay behind. Once the last guy left the room and the door was shut Sonny gave Jason his instructions.
“I want you to investigate everyone who just left this room. We didn’t get caught tonight, but it was a little too close to be a coincidence to me. I want to make sure everyone is good.”
Jason nodded and left.
When Elizabeth woke up at three-thirty in the morning because of her bladder she checked her phone when she got back to bed. There was one text from Jason that had been sent an hour earlier. It simply read, “Back home safely. See you at breakfast.” She smiled in relief and settled back into bed.

Kiss Me Slowly, Chapter 13
December 11, 2006
Elizabeth woke up earlier than she wanted and she had her baby to thank for that. When she was done in the bathroom she put her pajamas away and headed for the living room. She could hear noises in the kitchen and figured Mercedes was already working on breakfast. She changed direction when she heard the knock on the door. Zach, her night guard, stuck his head in and announced Jason. She met him near the door as Zach shut it. She smiled as he reached out to hug her.
“Morning.” She pulled back a little. “Did you get any sleep?”
He gave her a knowing smile.
“I did. I’m sorry I missed dinner.”
“So are we, but you’re here now.”
“Is he up?”
“No, but you can go wake him.”
“He’d love to see you.”
He stepped around her, but turned back abruptly. She had turned as well to go to the kitchen so there was barely any space between them. He skimmed her cheek with his hand before sliding it around to the nape of her neck. He pulled gently, but she came willingly. His lips brushed hers and she sighed into it.
He turned and went down the hallway leaving her there to grin stupidly.
Breakfast had been monopolized by Cameron, but Jason didn’t mind. He listened to everything Cameron told him, answered questions when warranted and even got in a few questions himself. He was a fun little boy and having Elizabeth as his mother only made him more adorable to Jason. He was looking forward to getting to spend more time with him now that Elizabeth was pregnant with his child. He knew he was getting ahead of himself, but he hoped one day he could be a real father to Cameron as well. Cameron was sliding out of his booster and Mercedes helped him down before taking him into the kitchen to wash his hands.
“Thank you, Jason.”
“Sorry. I was thinking about how much I appreciate all of Mercedes’ help and it just came out. She, and you, were life savers when I needed you.” He was silent as he was never good with praise. She took pity on him and moved on. “Any plans today?”
“I’ve got to go back down to the warehouse and put everything back in place after last night’s raid. Then figure out if we can keep that from happening again. What about you? Do you have to work?”
“I do have to work later. I’m going to fill in for someone who has to leave early. I’m going in soon after Cam goes down for nap. I should be home before dinner. But first, Emily’s coming over to visit. It’s been weeks since we just had time to sit down and be friends. Her schedule has been really busy with her residency and I don’t work at the hospital anymore so it’s been hit and miss. Other than her coming over with Nikolas and decorating like crazy people.”
He leaned forward and spoke low.
“The doorway decorations are my favorite.”
She blushed, but was quiet as Cameron was heading their way and chattering again.
“I feel like I have no idea what’s going on in your life.”
“You were here three days last week.”
“Please, we came by to cheer you up and decorate. It’s not like we could gossip and catch up with Nikolas here. Residency is kicking my butt. When I’m not working I’m sleeping it seems. How are you? What’s going on? Be kind to me and spill.”
Elizabeth smiled and turned so she was nestled into the corner of the couch and could see Emily sitting a few feet away at the other end.
“I guess the biggest news is Lucky is going after Cameron.” Emily’s mouth gaped open but didn’t reply. “Alexis dropped that bombshell at the hearing last week and the judge scheduled another hearing for this week. We’ve got a court appointed social worker assigned to us and will talk to Cam before the hearing. Jason and Diane both insist he won’t win, but I’m pregnant and emotional and I worry anyway.”
Emily scooted closer and pulled her in for a hug.
“It’s going to be okay. You’ll see.” She pulled back and grinned. “So, I may have heard through the grapevine that my brother is single again.”
“Oh, that was subtle.”
Emily blew out a breath.
“I’m too tired to be subtle.”
Elizabeth just shook her head in amusement.
“It’s true. It’s not my place to give details, but it was a big deal for him to get back together with her. I knew it couldn’t be easy on them as a couple for me to be pregnant so I suggested he invite her to my appointments. He wasn’t sure about it, but he must have invited her because she was there for the last one. She didn’t say much, but her body language was pretty loud and clear. I don’t know when it happened, but a week later he was telling me they were over.”
“Good. I tried to be supportive and a good sister, but I’ve moved on.” She looked at Elizabeth’s stomach. “And so has he.”
Elizabeth suddenly had a face full of pillow. She pushed it away to find Emily grabbing another one.
“No way!” She was trying to talk through her laughter. “I didn’t decorate every doorway so you could wimp out. Now tell me you have a plan or I’ll throw this one, too.”
Elizabeth stood up and moved around the couch.
“Want a drink?” The pillow hit her in the back of the head as she turned to the kitchen. She tried not to laugh at Emily’s face. Right before she was out of sight in the kitchen she answered. “We don’t need the mistletoe!”
December 14, 2006
“Come in, please. She’s in the bathroom.”
Jason could tell by Mercedes’ voice she was concerned.
But he didn’t wait to hear her answer. He was knocking on Elizabeth’s bathroom door and let himself in when she didn’t answer right away. She was sitting on the floor near the toilet. He was worried when he saw how clammy her skin looked. She gave him a shaky smile.
“Hey, I’m okay.”
He came closer and knelt in front of her.
“You don’t look okay.”
She reached out and he took her hand as he helped her up. He looked under the cabinet and found a washcloth and wet it before wringing it out. She closed her eyes as he gently stroked her face with the damp cloth. She made a soft sound in the back of her throat.
“I’m nervous. I haven’t been sick in months, but my nerves got the best of me this morning.”
His hand stilled on her face.
“You are not going to lose Cam. I’ll hide you before I let that happen.”
Another smile graced her face.
“You’re so good to me.” She pulled away, but only turned to get her toothbrush and paste from the sink. She was done quickly and quickly put on some mascara and a swipe of lipstick. “I’m ready.”
They were sitting on a bench in the hallway at the courthouse waiting for Diane. There were other people sitting on other benches and walking around, but Elizabeth only watched Cameron. She and Jason were sitting a few feet away from each other on the bench and Cameron was doing his best to climb up on the bench which always took several tries and then he’d carefully slide off. They didn’t talk to each other much, but they talked to Cameron and he talked to them. Jason noticed Diane first and got Elizabeth’s attention. They both stood as Diane neared them.
“It’s time to meet the social worker in room 27. Just so you know, Lucky and Alexis will also be present. The judge wants to see how they interact since he was a father figure to Cam for almost a year.” Elizabeth nodded, but her movements were jerky. Diane put a hand on her arm. “Elizabeth, I’m not going to let him get your son.”
Elizabeth turned to pick up Cameron, but Jason was already scooping him up and settling him in the bend of his arm. Cameron giggled and Elizabeth relaxed a little as she went to follow Diane. Jason brought up the rear. They were soon upstairs and standing outside the door. Diane opened the door and they all went in. Jason moved his arms forward to give Cameron to Elizabeth, but Cameron was hugging his neck tightly.
They knew there were others in the room but they were focused only on Cameron.
“I’ll be out in the hall waiting for you.”
Cameron tucked his head between Jason’s chin and shoulder. His voice was a whisper.
Jason rubbed Cameron’s back.
He sat up in Jason’s arms and reached for his mom. She pulled him close and they waved goodbye to Jason. Elizabeth took a deep breath as she watched Jason leave the room. She looked around and saw a train table across the room. As soon as Cameron saw it he wanted down. His little feet were running as soon as she put him down.
“Chugging Charlie, Mama!”
“I see, Baby.”
Elizabeth walked over and sat on a chair near the table while Cameron played. She looked around and saw a woman sitting at a small conference table and she had several piles of papers and folders out in front of her. She nodded at her when she caught Elizabeth’s eye. Lucky and Alexis were whispering to each other in chairs not far from them. Diane had taken a chair away from everyone, knowing she was only here if Elizabeth needed her. Not knowing what was expected she watched Cameron play until she got instructions.
“Look, Mama. Charlie is going fast.”
“He sure is. You’re doing a great job.”
Cameron looked behind him when he heard his name. His eyes widened when he saw Lucky and then he looked back at Elizabeth. He scooted around the train table to be near his mom. She got up and moved closer to him, kneeling next to him.
“It’s Daddy, Sweetheart.”
He shifted closer to her with wide eyes which never left Lucky’s face. Lucky’s face flashed anger before smiling at Cameron. He sped across the room, then dropped to his knees on the other side of the table.
“Cam, it’s Daddy. I know I was sick for awhile, but I’m all better now. Want to come over here and play with these trains?” Cameron looked up at his mom who nodded, but he shook his head and moved even closer to her. “Come on, Cam. It’s okay.”
“Give him time, Lucky. He hasn’t seen you in awhile.”
“Whose fault is that?”
“You really want to start the blame game?” She kissed Cameron’s temple and found a piece he was reaching for. “Give him some time.”
The next twenty minutes went by peacefully, but Cameron never did venture away from his side of the table. The woman at the table put all her folders and pen away before approaching them.
“I’ll see you all at the hearing this afternoon.”
Jason hadn’t been to the little cafe around the corner from the courthouse, but it was the quickest way to get lunch before Cameron’s custody hearing. He had brought extra guards because it was unfamiliar territory and so he could focus on the little boy whose arms were wrapped around his neck. When he was done ordering and picking up their food he walked to the far corner where the guards had been standing to keep it fairly empty and sat down, getting everything situated. Cam was sitting in the chair next to him. Jason put the tray liner down in front of Cameron and poured out his fries and chicken nuggets on it so they could cool.
“Want me to cut them in half so they’ll cool faster?” Cameron nodded enthusiastically. Jason saw Cameron sneak a look at him before snatching a french fry. He smiled, but didn’t let on that he saw him. “There you go.”
Cameron picked up a piece of chicken in each hand and started munching. Jason picked up his burger as well. Jason learned more about Chugging Charlie while they ate than he would ever remember, but he just smiled and listened.
“In 11 days.”
“Does Santa know where my new house is?”
Jason looked into Cameron’s earnest eyes.
“Of course he does.”
“Oh, good. Santa’s coming.” Cameron went back to munching fries. He looked up at Jason and Jason held back a smile at Cameron’s furrowed brow. “Are you?”
“Am I what?”
“Coming when Santa does.”
“I don’t know. I haven’t talked to your mom.”
Cameron scrunched his face up before smiling.
“Get away from my son!”
The automatic door opened quietly and Elizabeth breezed through them with Cody right behind her. The elevator took them to the second floor where the doctors had their personal offices. It didn’t take her long to find Patrick’s and to knock. His muffled voice called her in.
“Hey, you okay?”
He was already standing up and moving around the desk to hug her.
“I’m fine. I have some information you need to know. I was busy all night with emergency surgery and your phone went straight to voicemail earlier.”
They took seats in front of his desk.
“Sorry. I turned it off when we met with Lucky and the social worker this morning. I came over as soon as I got your message.”
“How is that going?”
“I don’t know. Cam wouldn’t go near Lucky but I don’t know if the social worker will just think he’s too little to know any better. Both Jason and Diane have assured me I won’t lose Cam, but until this is actually over I won’t be able to relax.”
“That’s why I called. I want you to be prepared as best you can. I ran down to the cafeteria last night for a quick bite before surgery and I saw your grandmother with Lucky and Alexis. It looked serious.”
She slumped in her chair.
“I know she wasn’t happy with me at all when she found out Jason’s the father, but I’m stunned she would side with Lucky.”
“When is your hearing?”
“This afternoon, but I don’t know if they make decisions after one session.”
He reached out and covered her hands with his.
“I’m not Jason’s biggest fan, but I don’t doubt he has a great lawyer. It’s going to be okay. I didn't want you to be blindsided.”
“What are friends for?”
As soon as Jason heard Lucky’s voice he picked up Cameron and sat him on his right knee next to the wall, as far from Lucky as he could in the situation. Jason would just as easily rather pummel Lucky than sit idly by but with Cameron and a restaurant full of strangers he didn’t. Jason’s voice was low, but forceful.
“You don't want to do this now.”
Lucky put his hands on the end of the table and leaned toward Jason and Cameron.
“Are you going to stop me?”
Cameron flew into action and was all arms and legs trying to stand up. Once he was upright he hugged Jason tightly around the neck, eyes wide with fear which never left Lucky’s face. Jason’s glare never left the other man, but his arm came up and around Cameron pulling him close. Alexis stepped up to Lucky and practically whispered.
“Lucky, people are starting to look.”
Lucky wasn’t done.
“She won’t need him once she has your b—“
“Lucky!” Alexis was practically hissing. “Now is not the time! People are looking. Do not make me drag you from this table.”
“Don’t worry, Cam. Soon it will just be you and Daddy.”
He shook her off as he walked away. She looked around the room and sighed before following him. Jason rubbed Cameron’s back, but didn’t look down at him until Lucky had left the building. Once they were alone again Jason pushed his tray to the opposite side of the table before picking Cameron up and sitting him on the table so they were practically eye to eye.
“That was scary, wasn’t it?” Cameron nodded. “Yeah, but it’s over now.”
“I want mommy.”
“How about we text her and see if she’s almost done at the hospital?”
Jason pulled his phone out, but he felt her before he could dial. He looked up at whispered at Cameron to look at the door.
Jason helped him slide off the table and as soon as his feet hist the floor he was running. Elizabeth scooped him up and kissed him all over his face making him giggle. She made her way over and sat in the chair next to Jason.
“I have news about Lucky.”
Jason was surprised.
“So do we.”

Kiss Me Slowly, Chapter 14
Still December 14, 2006
Despite having to share what they each knew about Lucky the rest of lunch was a pleasant time. Jason had Cameron sitting on his lap again while Elizabeth had grabbed some food and that’s where he stayed until it was time to go. Before she was emotionally ready they had cleaned up and were standing outside their assigned courtroom. Diane and the woman from earlier came out of the courtroom.
“Mrs. Spencer,” Elizabeth winced. “Ms. Webber?”
Ms. Dearden smiled.
“Ms. Webber it is then. The judge is unlikely to want to speak to Cameron because of his age. However, it is possible which is why you were asked to bring him. If he does want to talk to Cameron he will do so with myself and an adult of your choosing in the room next door. It just can’t be you or Mr. Spencer.”
Elizabeth looked at Jason who answered her with an almost imperceptible nod.
“I choose Jason.”
“Not a problem. Like I said it’s unlikely but we prepare anyway.” She glanced at her watch. “We will be starting in ten minutes.” She addressed Elizabeth and Diane. “I’ll see you both next door.”
She left the room.
“That’s my cue, too. I want to look over a couple things before the enemy gets here.”
Elizabeth laughed gently at her terminology.
“Actually, we need to talk to you about Lucky. Some things happened at lunch.”
“We are here to decide custody of Cameron Alexander Webber. This morning, Cameron’s court appointed child advocate, Patricia Dearden, met with Cameron, his mother, Elizabeth, and his step-father, Lucas Spencer. As the petitioner, Lucas Spencer will go first. We will then hear from Elizabeth Webber to be followed by the recommendation of Ms. Dearden. Any questions?”
Neither attorney had questions.
“Your Honor, Lucky Spencer only wants what is best for his son. No, he is not Cam’s biological father, but he has helped raise him for the last year and a half. Lucky believes Cam would be safer living with him than with his mother who is having a baby with Jason Morgan.” She pulled out a sheet of paper from a blue folder. “I also have a statement here from Elizabeth’s own grandmother, Audrey Hardy, who wants to help Cameron transition into living with Lucky full-time. She, too, is concerned with Elizabeth’s relationship with Jason Morgan. She is out in the hallway if you would like her to testify. Thank you, Your Honor.”
As Alexis sat down the judge wrote something on the paper in front of him.
“That’s not necessary at this time, Ms. Davis. However, I do have a few questions.”
“What are your concerns about Jason Morgan being around Cameron Webber?”
“He is a known mobster, Your Honor.”
“Do you have proof of this, Ms. Davis?”
Alexis looked away in frustration before answering.
“No, Your Honor. Mr. Morgan and his partner have been very careful. However, for being coffee importers they do get raided by police and arrested quite often. How many coffee importers do you know who need bodyguards?”
“Objection, Your Honor. The law states everyone, including Mr. Morgan, is innocent until proven guilty. Mr. Morgan hasn’t been convicted of any crime no matter how often the Port Charles Police Department has harassed him.”
“You started this, Ms. Davis.” He wrote something else down. “You may proceed, Ms. Miller.”
“Thank you, Your Honor. Elizabeth done her best for her son since the moment she found out she was pregnant. She gave him security when she changed her professions so she could better provide for him. She gave him a family when she fell in love with Lucky. She gave him stability when she sent him to her grandmother’s house when she was helping her husband through withdrawal. And now she just wants to protect him by keeping him from the man who shot her and accused her of stealing drugs for him.”
“Can you elaborate about those last two things, please?”
“Of course, Your Honor. In September of this year, Mr. Spencer tried to frame Mr. Morgan for drug possession. In the process he shot my client in the shoulder. He was arrested and held at General Hospital until he went through withdrawal. He is currently out on bail and awaiting trial. While he accused Elizabeth of stealing the drugs for him he is involved with a candy striper at the hospital who is a likelier candidate.”
The judge wrote a few more things down as Diane resumed her seat.
“Alright, Ms. Dearden. It’s your turn.”
“I met with Elizabeth and Cameron Webber and Lucky Spencer this morning to see how Lucky and Cameron interacted. Usually, I like to see them at least twice before making any recommendations to the court, but I am ready to make my decision today.”
“Objection, Your Honor.”
“Noted, but objection overruled. Ms. Davis, you don’t even know if the recommendation is against you or not. You can object later if need be.”
“This morning I watched Lucky approach Cameron who was hesitant to be near him. I find that to be common as records have stated it has been several months since they spent any time together and because of Cameron’s age. Cameron stayed on his side of the train table with his mother but played near Lucky for the short time we were together. I was ready to recommend weekly supervised visitation.” There were audible sighs of relief and whispers over at Lucky’s table. “However, I have changed my mind.”
The judge banged his gavel.
“Mr. Spencer, you will refrain from calling out unless you are being addressed.”
“Wait, Ms. Davis. Please continue, Ms. Dearden.”
“I saw Mr. Spencer at lunchtime. He acted in a threatening manner and Cameron reacted as if it happened before. I cannot in good conscience recommend making Cameron spend time with him.”
“Objection, Your Honor! This is unbelievable!”
Alexis was now standing up, hands on the table.
“Sit down, Ms. Davis.” She sat down carefully. “I know you were there, Ms. Davis, as was I.” The judge looked at Lucky. “Cameron, the little boy you want to take home with you, was clearly terrified.” He then looked at everyone in the room. “You know the court doesn’t take a child’s welfare lightly. However, I will go talk to him for myself. Please wait here. I will be back shortly.”
The judge left the room. Diane and Elizabeth were quiet at their table, but Lucky was agitated and became increasingly louder as time went on. It wasn’t very long before they were asked to rise again when he returned. He wasted no time after they sat down.
“I’m not going to draw this out. Mr. Spencer, you have no claim on the minor child, Cameron Webber. Petition for full custody has been denied. You can petition for joint custody in the future, but your chances are not good. Court is adjourned.”
Alexis had pulled Lucky out of the courtroom rather quickly and soon it was only Diane and Elizabeth left.
“Thank you, Diane.”
“You’re welcome, Elizabeth, but Lucky practically did the work for me. You and your son are now free.”
“Thank you all the same.”
“I’ll see you later.”
Elizabeth watched her leave before getting up and going to the door that she knew Jason and Cameron were behind. She opened it up and her heart stuttered, just a little. Jason was reclined with his head on the arm of the couch with his legs stretched out towards the other end. Cameron was asleep on his chest, snoring quietly. She smiled as she came further into the room. Her voice was soft.
“Was he like this when the judge came in?”
“Did he say anything?”
“Nothing bad. He made a comment about Cam being comfortable and safe enough to fall asleep, asked if we needed anything. It was….weird.”
She laughed quietly.
“I bet. It’s all over now. We can go home. Cam is all ours.” Her eyes widened and her cheeks reddened in embarrassment. “I mean mine.”
He sat up quickly, but smoothly, holding Cameron to his chest with his hand.
“I like ours.”
Jason had to go by the warehouse after taking Elizabeth and Cameron home. He was getting ready to head back to Harborview a few hours later when he received a call from Cody and went the opposite direction. He kept the door from slamming when he stepped into Jake’s. He looked over and saw Elizabeth sitting at the bar. She had a water bottle in front of her with a little umbrella in it. He couldn’t really see her face from the side, but he could tell by her body language she wasn’t herself. He sat on the stool next to her and ordered a beer. He waited until it was in his hands before speaking to her.
She looked over at him.
“Hey.” She gave him a small smile. “I’m okay. Just taking a moment to grieve another broken marriage.” She laid her hand on his arm. “I am not sorry for this baby or what we are to each other.” She sighed. “I’m sad that it took me this long to realize this would have been the outcome even if August hadn’t happened. How many years did you watch me try to recreate or hold onto what Lucky and I had when we were barely teenagers? So, I’m here,” she chuckled,” not drinking, to close one chapter and welcome in a new one.”
He raised his beer towards her.
“I’ll drink to that.”
December 17, 2006
Before Elizabeth could respond to Cody Carly was already at the counter. She put her purse on the counter and rested for a minute to catch her breath. Elizabeth really wanted to roll her eyes, but she was able to keep from it. She gave Carly her ultra polite voice.
“I heard about your divorce.”
She picked up a coffee pot and skirted around the counter and started making the rounds for refills. Carly followed her.
“I hate to repeat myself.”
“And yet you continue to do so.”
Carly ground her teeth in anger.
“But I will do it until you stay away from Jason.”
Elizabeth swept a hand grandly across her belly.
“Good luck hoping for that.”
She turned her back and headed back behind the counter to make more coffee.
“You’re only going to hurt him, Little Girl, and I won’t let you.”
Elizabeth whirled around and slammed the coffee pot on the countertop.’
“Are you the pot or the kettle? You’re the only person who is worthy of forgiveness after hurting Jason? What Jason and I do or don’t do is none of your business. We are this baby’s parents, not you. Now get out before I make you.”
December 18, 2006
“Should I feel guilty I didn’t tell anyone we are having an ultrasound today?”
He held her hand to keep her steady as she climbed up onto the doctor’s table. The paper sheet under her crinkled as she laid down.
“Why should you feel guilty?”
She looked at him and smiled, knowing he didn’t care what other people thought.
“No reason, I guess. They’re just excited, too, which is why I didn’t tell them.” She could sense his confusion. “I love my friends, but boy, they’re nosy and bossy and way too invested at times. This is our baby, not theirs.”
“Do you have a preference?”
“I go back and forth.” She chuckled. “Some weeks I think it would be easier to have another boy because I’ve already got Cam, but then there are times I think I’d love a little girl. What about you?”
He leaned forward and put his elbows on his knees.
“When I took Michael home it was unexpected so I just had to wing it at first. I was terrified of doing the wrong thing, but I got the hang of it. And then he wasn’t mine anymore so I tried to put it to the side because it hurt so much. Then Sam was having a girl which I thought would be different. I mean, who could imagine Jason Morgan having a daughter? But that didn’t work out, either.”
She reached out for his hand. He put his hand on the reclined bed she was laying on so she could reach him. She stroked the back of his hand as she tried to think of something that wouldn’t sound trite. She tugged him closer with her other hand. When he was close enough she kissed his cheek and pulled back slightly. She gave him a tender smile.
“So, no preference?”
He moved their hands to her stomach before raising a little to reach her face. He brushed a kiss across her mouth but she snaked her hand behind his neck and pulled him closer to make it last longer. He smiled after he pulled away.
“Do you want a morning or afternoon appointment?”
Elizabeth glanced up at Jason.
Jason only nodded. The nurse looked back at the screen.
“Okay, how does January 15th at 2pm work for you?”
The nurse wrote it down on a little card and passed it over the counter.
“We’ll see you then.”
They shouldn't have been too surprised to run into Alan when the elevator doors opened, but they were just the same. He was surprised to see them, too.
“Oh, hello. Is everything alright with you and the baby?”
Elizabeth smiled and let Jason lead her onto the elevator.
"Things are great, Dr. Quartermaine. We were here for a check-up." She caught Jason's eye and she could tell he gave her the go ahead. “We found out we’re having a boy.”
Alan’s whole face lit up.
“That’s amazing. Boys are a lot of fun, aren't they?”
The elevator dinged as it reached the ground floor.
"They really are."
They got off the elevator and Alan paused.
"Thank you for telling me."
"You're welcome. Good-bye, Dr. Quartermaine."
As they headed off Alan's voice followed after them.
"Please call me Alan.”
She smiled and waved as they headed outside. Cody was waiting for them. Jason nodded at Cody before asking Elizabeth the obvious.
Elizabeth just laughed.
“Of course. Kelly’s?”
She wrapped her arm around his as they headed for the direction of the small diner. They were strolling across the waterfront when she stopped. She looked out over the water.
“Is it okay if we sit a minute?”
“You don't want to wait until Kelly’s? It's cold out here."
“Just for a minute.” He brushed the bench off and they sat down. She still had her arms wrapped around his right one so it was easy to rest her cheek on the back of his shoulder. “I like that it's quiet out here.”
“So, how are you feeling about the news?”
“It still doesn’t feel real. I’ve known for months about this baby, but knowing…”
He trailed off.
“Knowing he’s a boy makes things real.”
“Yeah. I’m not disappointed,” He hung his head. “But I can’t help feeling guilty.”
She squeezed his arm gently to hug him. She nudged him with her foot until he looked at her.
“Hey, we may not have planned to have a baby, but he’s here now and there’s not going to be ‘it’s too dangerous’ talk, you hear me? You deserve to be happy no matter what your job is. You deserve this, even if it is with me.”
She winked at him. He looked out over the water one more time before catching her eye again. He rubbed his hand over one of hers.
“Okay.” He leaned close to her ear. “You've never been second best.”
“Okay.” He knew he was in trouble when she gave him a cheeky grin. “No leather jackets until he can drive.”
“Done. No leather jackets until he can drive a motorcycle."
“Wait, what?” She playfully shoved him. "That's not what I said."
“It's not my fault you didn't specify.” He helped her stand up. "Come on, let's get out of the cold.”
They started walking again. They started up the stairs.
“I can't wait to see him.”
He stopped one step below her.
“He's going to be beautiful, just like his mother.”
Chapter 15 by lovemyqtkids
December 21, 2006
Elizabeth was putting her seat belt on when her phone rang.
“We need to talk about Christmas.”
“Well, hello to you, too, Emily.”
Emily just scoffed knowing Elizabeth wasn’t really put out.
“Funny. We need to do something together. I’d invite you to come to the mansion, but I know you probably don’t want to be the center of attention with my family. How about we get together with Nikolas on Christmas Eve? We could invite all our friends.” She paused for dramatic effect and Elizabeth rolled her eyes while smiling. “And Jason.”
“It sounds like fun. Let me think about it and we can talk about it later. I’ve got to go. I just picked Cam up from a playdate so I need to get him home for nap.”
“Okay. Catch you later.”
She caught Cody’s eye who was sitting in the seat next to her before looking back at Cameron.
“Your aunt is a handful.”
He just grinned at her. She turned the car on and eased out onto the street. The ride was silent but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was weird the first couple weeks when Cody had started guarding her, but they’d settled into a routine that they were both happy with. Elizabeth was about to ask him a question as they drove into an intersection, but a loud crunching metal sound filled the car and they were jerked to the right. The car swung almost completely 180 degrees before slamming into an overnight mailbox on the corner.
The Metro Court restaurant was not Jason’s favorite place to eat, but Carly had asked him to meet her for lunch so he agreed. He wondered if she was going to say anything about hunting down Elizabeth the day before. He didn’t expect her to as her M.O. was to do what she wanted and pretend whatever she didn’t like didn’t happen. He was directed to a table and told Carly had an emergency and she hoped to return shortly. He sat down facing the dining room and gave his drink order to the waitress when she stopped by. The waitress was blocking his view when she dropped his drink off which is why he didn’t see Sam approach until she was already at the table. She seemed happy to see him.
“Jason. It’s been awhile. How are you?”
“I’m good. Staying busy with work.”
“Good. I’m good, too. Started working with my mom.”
“Oh. Hope that works out for you.”
“Are you expecting someone?”
“Carly.” He didn’t want to be rude, but he didn’t want her to stay, either. “What do you want, Sam?”
“I wanted to see how you’re doing. I miss you.” He could tell she was waiting for him to say something, maybe even reciprocate those feelings, but he stayed quiet. “Where’s Elizabeth, Jason? You must be feeling like you’ve hit the jackpot. Elizabeth is not only the girl you thought you’d never have, but she’s just pure enough to be just what the Quartermaines wanted and giving you a baby.” Her voice turned bitter. “You’ve got the trifecta.”
His voice was patient.
“I’m sorry you’re unhappy.”
“Are you, Jason? Because I bet you’ve already moved on, haven’t you?”
“I’m not getting into this with you.”
“It looks like I got here just in time.”
Jason knew things would only go downhill now that Carly was there.
The crying woke her.
“Ow. Cam?” Elizabeth rubbed her nose. It was stinging as well as her cheeks. She whimpered when she tried to look around enough to get a good look at Cameron. She could hear him crying. “Cam, are you okay?”
She felt a hand on her arm and heard Cody’s voice.
“He looks okay, Elizabeth. I think he’s just scared. How are you?”
She took a deep breath to begin to calm her breathing. She closed her eyes as she took stock of her injuries.
“My face hurts from the air bag and my neck is stiff. I think I tensed up once we were hit.” Her voice was shaky as she smoothed her hands over her stomach. “I don’t have any pain where the baby is so I think we’re okay. What about you?”
“I got hit by the airbag, too, and I did bounce my head off the window, but I’m good.”
“Do you know what happened?”
Cody looked out the driver’s side windows.
“I think they ran a red light and clipped the back of the driver’s side throwing us into a spin.”
Elizabeth cried out when someone banged on her window and startled her making her jerk her neck.
“Hang on in there! The police and medics are on their way!”
Jason’s voice had a warning tone, but Carly ignored it.
“What, Jason? You dumped her and she needs to get over it and move on. It’s the only positive thing about this whole baby debacle.”
“Excuse me?” He grasped Carly’s elbow and started walking. “Good-bye, Sam.” He didn’t say anything as they rode on the elevator or when they passed her secretary as he directed her into her office. She pulled away once he shut the door. She crossed her arms and her stubborn expression told him she wouldn’t speak first. “Have I ever not supported you?”
Her expression morphed into shock.
“No, I’m serious. You have had some bad plans over the years and I’ve stood by you every time. I am going to be a father and my self-proclaimed best friend can’t support me because Elizabeth is his mother.”
Her eyes welled up.
“His? You’re having a son?”
She was stunned at how quickly his face went from annoyance to joy.
“I am and I’m excited, Carly. I can’t wait to meet him and take care of him and raise him with Elizabeth.” He watched her eyebrows practically shoot up. “You heard me. I want to be with her. I don’t know why you hate her. I don’t know if it’s a petty grudge from all those years ago or what, but I’m not putting up with it anymore. This is the only time I’m going to tell you to leave her alone. Don’t make me tell you again.”
It all started when one of the responding police officers wouldn’t let Elizabeth ride in the ambulance with Cameron. She lost it when Officer Planchett closed the doors with Cameron inside and her outside. He handcuffed her when she started banging on the ambulance doors. He put her in the back of a squad car when she begged him in a tearful voice to let her go with her son. She could hear Cody arguing with the cop as well but she couldn’t hear them well enough to know what they were arguing about. She tilted her head back and rested it on the seat. She took a deep breath and assessed. She had been too busy arguing to stay with Cameron that it didn’t occur to her to demand to be seen at General Hospital herself. Her face, neck and shoulders hurt, but she didn’t think anything was seriously wrong. However, she knew Diane would have a field day with the officer who refused to let her go to the hospital. She stroked her belly with both hands and tried to stay calm. The passenger door on the other side opened and Cody was shoved roughly inside. Both of their phones were lost somewhere in her wrecked car. Officer Planchett got in and started the car. He looked back at them.
“You can go to the hospital after we interview you.”
She gave a worried glance to Cody. He nodded.
“Jason will be there soon.”
It first happened as they parked at the police department. She sucked in her breath and clenched her hand into a fist. Cody didn’t even ask her.
“Officer, we need to go to the hospital now. She doesn’t look so good.”
Officer Planchett yanked the door open and pulled her out by her arm.
“We’ll go to the hospital when I say we’ll go to the hospital.” Cody stayed silent although it took a lot of restraint. He climbed out after Elizabeth. They were led into the station and sat next to a desk on the far side of the room. Officer Planchett put his hands on his desk and leaned toward them. “Don’t go anywhere.” He caught the eye of the cop at the next desk. “I’ll be right back.”
Elizabeth twisted to her right and gripped the arm of the chair tightly with her bound hands and tried to keep from groaning.
Her voice was shaky and she lifted watery eyes to Cody.
“I’ve got some cramping. It’s not severe, but it’s still uncomfortable.”
His voice lowered.
“Now that we’re here Jason will get word. I need you to hang on, alright?”
She nodded and a couple tears fell.
“You can’t be serious, Jason. She’s….Elizabeth.”
Before he could respond to that nonsense his phone rang. It was their contact down at the PCPD.
“Mr. Morgan, Elizabeth Webber was just brought into the station. I don’t know—“
Jason cut him off.
“I’ll be right there.”
He hung up and dialed again.
“Not now, Carly.” The other end of the line was picked up. “Diane, I need you to meet me at the PCPD. It’s about Elizabeth.”
Jason had spent many years showing no emotion around the police but it took everything in him to do it now after walking into the police station and seeing Elizabeth handcuffed and crying across the room. Diane put her hand on his arm and hoped it was enough.
“Jason, you’ll have to stay here until I know what’s going on.” She looked over at Elizabeth as well. “I’ll be as quick as possible. I promise.”
He refused to sit down and glared at anyone who dared to look his way. He watched Diane argue with one cop before going absolutely ballistic on the one standing at the desk where Cody and Elizabeth were. She was pointing down at Elizabeth’s hands and obviously demanding the handcuffs to be removed. Some young cop jumped off from a desk halfway across the room and removed them which earned him his own showdown with the cop at the desk. Diane motioned for Cody to help Elizabeth up and to get her to the door, but she never stopped yelling at the man in front of her. Cody spoke first when they reached him.
“We need to head to General Hospital. Diane will meet us there.”
Elizabeth looked up with her wet face. Anguish bled through her voice.
“We were in an accident and I’m cramping.”
Jason carried Elizabeth into the Emergency Room. She was met by Robin and Emily and taken into one of the cubicles. Jason rushed to the desk.
“Nurse Johnson, can you please find Cameron for me? He was taken from Elizabeth at the accident and brought here by himself. She is finally getting checked out and asked me to find him.”
She leaned across the desktop and spoke low.
“I’m not supposed to tell you anything, but seeing as you’re the closest thing that sweet boy has to a parent right now with Elizabeth down here I’ll tell you. But, if anyone asks, you’re psychic.”
“He’s down in Cubicle 8….with Audrey.”
Emily helped Elizabeth lay down on the bed while Robin picked up the phone on the wall and talked quietly.
“Talk to me, Elizabeth.”
Emily continued to work while waiting for Elizabeth to calm down enough to speak. She put an oxygen sensor on Elizabeth’s finger and grabbed a pressure cuff.
“We were in an accident: Cody, Cam and me. The car came out of nowhere and spun us around.” The tears kept falling. “They put Cam in an ambulance all by himself and handcuffed me.” She was practically choking on tears now. “I can’t lose this baby, Em. I can’t.”
Emily pulled her up and just held her tightly. She ran her hand up and down Elizabeth’s back in a soothing manner. She was practically near tears herself. She was whispering but wasn’t sure what she was saying. She just knew her best friend was terrified and wanted to help her. She felt Robin walk past her towards the curtain and pull it open.
“Elizabeth?” Kelly’s voice came through the opening and she was pushing a portable ultrasound machine. Emily pulled back so Elizabeth could see her. “We’re going to do whatever we can to keep Baby Boy Morgan in there, okay?” Elizabeth nodded. “Now, let’s take a look.”
Jason pulled back the curtain and saw Audrey sitting next to Cameron on the bed. His relief was instant at seeing the little boy unharmed. Cameron was telling some story when he happened to see Jason.
“Jason!” He rolled onto his stomach and tried sliding off the table, but Audrey caught him and picked him up. He squirmed against her her but she wouldn’t let him go. “No, I want Jason. I want Jason!”
Jason stepped further into the cubicle and Audrey moved away from him. Cameron was still struggling in her arms and calling for Jason.
“Cam.” He was too busy making his wishes known to listen to give any mind to Audrey. “Cam.”
The curtain whipped back revealing Patrick.
“What is going on?”
“Hey, Cam. Why are you yelling, Buddy?”
“I want Jason.”
Patrick walked over to him and Audrey.
“I’m not Jason, but how about I take you? I have someone who wants to see you.”
Patrick reached towards Cameron and scooped him out of Audrey’s arms before she could complain.
“Who is it?”
Patrick whispered in Cameron’s ear. Cameron clapped and turned his upper body so he could see Jason.
“It’s Mommy, Jason! Let’s go!”
Jason held the curtain out of the way and followed Patrick and Cameron out to the main room. He stopped abruptly when Patrick did an about face and passed him Cameron. Patrick shrugged.
“He wants you.”
Patrick called out when they reached Cubicle 3.
“Come on in.”
Elizabeth was in the middle of her ultrasound when they arrived. She motioned Jason over. He nudged the stool over with his foot and sat down so Elizabeth could reach Cameron herself. She cupped his face with her hands.
“Hey, baby. I missed you.”
Patrick spoke from his spot near the hallway. She let go of him and he settled in Jason’s lap.
“He got a clean bill of health. He was with Audrey when Jason found him.”
She nodded in understanding. She looked at Jason who stroked his thumb across her left cheek.
“How are you?”
Kelly looked at Elizabeth who nodded.
“As I was telling Elizabeth cramping in and of itself is not a bad thing, but since she was in an accident it’s always a good idea to get checked out. So far everything looks good. Baby looks good. Everything else looks to be nice and attached. Dr. Drake diagnosed her with a borderline Grade 3 concussion and she’s also bruised on her left side. We’re keeping her tonight and then we’ll make a decision about whether or not she can go home. She and the baby look good, but we don’t want to take any chances.” She pointed to an area on the screen. “See? He’s perfect.” She wiped the gel off Elizabeth’s belly. “You call me for anything, you hear me?”
“Thank you, Kelly.”
Kelly unplugged the machine and started wrapping the cords around it so it could be moved. Patrick came over and started pushing it for her. Patrick called back.
“Someone will be in soon to take you upstairs. Oh, and Emily is on her way back.”
Jason had just gotten Cameron settled next to Elizabeth when they heard Emily’s voice right outside.
“Can I come in?”
“Yes, you goober.”
“Sorry I got called away. How are you and my nephews?”
“Cam is great and baby is doing much better. They’ve got me on an I.V. to keep me hydrated and my cramps are already getting better. I’m hoping it was just the stress of what happened after the accident. They’re keeping me overnight.”
“Do you want me to take Cam?”
“I want to talk to Jason and then I’ll let you know, okay?”
“Sure. Also, Cody is done and waiting outside. How about Cody and I take this little guy to the cafeteria and get a treat so you can talk?”
“Thanks, Em.” Elizabeth hugged and kissed Cameron before passing him to Jason to do the same. Emily picked him up and left.
“You’re really okay?”
Her voice was shaky anyway.
“We seem to be. You don’t know how grateful I am.”
“Oh, I bet I do.”
“I thought you might take Cam home—“
Jason was quick to jump in.
“I’m not leaving you.”
She smiled at him in understanding.
“I know. Em’s offer is sweet, but I know she’s on the schedule. Let’s just call Mer—“
The rings holding the curtain clanged loudly as it was yanked back.
“Elizabeth, let me take Cam home so you can rest.”
Elizabeth’s mouth fell open and before she could respond Jason did.
“It’s not your business, Jason.”
He stood up, putting himself between Elizabeth and Audrey.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not letting you upset Elizabeth right now. Cam isn’t going anywhere with you.”
“No, Gram. Jason is right.”
She was about to say something else when Epiphany strolled in with a wheelchair.
“Time to go. Your chariot, such as it is, awaits.”
“Want some help?”
Elizabeth nodded. Jason picked her up and set her in the chair. He stepped behind it and grasped the handles.
“If you’d like to push, that’s fine. Follow me.”
Jason paused in front of Audrey.
“Stay away from my family.”
Elizabeth was feeling much better after getting settled into her room and knowing Cam had made it home safely with Mercedes. Jason had sent one of the guards out to get dinner while he talked to Cody in the hallway. She heard the door open and smiled even though she couldn’t see with her eyes shut.
“Are you going to give me a hard time now about doing my own driving?”
Jason smiled back even though she couldn’t see him.
“Do you want me to?”
He made his way to the head of the bed and pulled a stool over before giving her a quick kiss. She opened her eyes and caressed his cheek with her left hand.
“I figure it’s coming now that we wrecked.”
He removed her hand from his face and tucked into his own hand as he sat down.
“You’re a good driver and it was only an accident. However, maybe you could humor me until after our son is born. Then, if you want, we’ll teach you some defensive driving techniques to help in any future situations.” He looked down and then back into her eyes. “Think you can live with that?”
Her eyes drifted closed again. Her voice was slow and agreeable.
“Rest. I’ll be here when you wake up.”

Kiss Me Slowly, Chapter 16
December 22, 2006
She groaned as she opened her eyes.
“It can’t be morning already.” She hadn’t even stopped talking before Jason was off his cot and sitting on the edge of the bed. She narrowed her eyes knowing she wouldn’t be able to tell if he’d been sleeping or not because he always woke up almost instantly. She tried to put her hand over her mouth, but he pushed it away. “Morning breath.”
He answered but still didn’t stop until he was kissing her.
She tried not to happily sigh, but it was hard. She was still tired from being awakened at all hours of the night. When he pulled back she took to stroking his forearm still thankful he was with her.
“Mercedes said he ate a huge breakfast and is now drawing you a picture. No bad dreams.”
She blinked back tears that threatened to fall.
“When I woke up in the car he was crying and I couldn’t see him or get to him. And then that officer shut him in that ambulance…”
She trailed off. He gently pulled her to him and held her as she cried anyway. Even after she’d stopped crying they sat there with him stroking her back. Eventually they were interrupted by a knock on the door. They both looked toward it and Diane was waved in when they saw it was her.
“Good morning, you two. How are you this morning?”
Jason moved to sit back on his stool.
“Doing well, thank you.”
“Thank you for your help yesterday.”
“My dear, fabulous paycheck aside I was happy to do it. Any time I get to go up against the incompetent PCPD is a fun day.” Elizabeth smiled. “The officer in question, Officer Planchett, I believe, has been reprimanded and his job is on thin ice. He apparently went to the academy with Lucky and was angry with you on Lucky’s behalf. He will think twice about that after the riot act I read him and Commissioner Scorpio yesterday.” She looked back and forth between them. “One word from you and I’ll sue him and the department.”
Elizabeth had never really seen Diane fired up and it made her smile. Jason swung his gaze to her.
“What do you want to do?”
She reached for him and his hand met her halfway. He rested their joined hands on her leg.
“I try to see the best in people. I really do, but that man yesterday put my baby and me at risk all because of some loyalty to Lucky. I don’t think I can let that go.”
“Leave it to me, Elizabeth.”
Jason answered for them both.
“Thank you, Diane.”
Mercedes had brought Cameron by after breakfast and he stayed until almost naptime. Jason went with him and Mercedes back to the apartment to put him down for his nap while Elizabeth met with a physical therapist to teach her some exercises to help with the pain in her neck. When Jason returned she had her chin to her chest and then rolled her head to the right, back, left before returning to the front. She caught sight of Jason and smiled.
“How silly do I look?”
“Does it help?”
“If I do it slowly.”
“Doesn’t matter what you look like then, does it?”
Elizabeth finished her number of rotations. The therapist nodded.
“That’s good. I’ll leave this sheet here and just do the exercises listed along with the number of sets. We’ll schedule a follow-up in a week or so and see how you’re feeling then.”
“Okay. Thank you.” Soon it was just the two of them. Jason moved closer and sat on the bed near her hip. He leaned toward her and she met him halfway. The kiss was slow and thorough. She smiled as she pulled back. “That was a really nice hello.”
“I aim to please.”
“Oh, I remember.”
“Are they letting you go home?”
“I don’t know yet.” Her tone was frustrated so he stroked a hand over her hair. She leaned into his touch. “Kelly hasn’t been able to stop by yet today and she won’t release me until she’s done another ultrasound.”
He leaned in again and brushed his lips across hers.
“She just wants to make sure you’re both okay.”
“I know, but I don’t like being here.”
“I know how you feel. How about we talk about what you want to do for Christmas?” She opened her mouth, but he beat her to it. “Besides getting out of here.”
“I don’t really know. I’d like to spend part of the holiday, either Christmas Eve or Christmas, with you.” Her face changed to one of uncertainty. “If you want to.”
His voice was low and tender.
“I like that idea.”
“What do you usually do?”
“Christmas Eve is usually quiet and I hang out with Sonny and Carly for Christmas.”
“That sounds nice.” His eyebrows shot up. She laughed. “For you. With your friends. Not me and Carly. Probably ever. I’m sorry for that.”
“Not your fault.” He caught her eye because he wanted to make sure she was okay with his idea. “How about I spend Christmas morning with them and we can spend the rest of the day together?”
“I don’t want you to change your plans for me, Jason.”
“I’m not changing them, just altering them a little.”
Jason leaned toward her and she stopped talking.
“I don’t want to wait another year to spend Christmas with you.”
December 24, 2006
Edward had been working on a plan ever since he found out Jason was going to be a father. He didn’t like Jason’s lifestyle or business interests at all, but he was Edward’s own blood and his child would be as well. Although, he knew Jason would treat that sweet little Cameron Webber like his own biological child as well or his name wasn’t Edward Quartermaine. He was practically giddy at a new generation of Quartermaines, even if their last name would eventually be Morgan. As he stepped off the elevator he literally stopped in his tracks when he saw Jason rush in the automatic doors of General Hospital carrying a bright blue train about the size of a plastic tote. He wondered what Jason was doing when he realized Jason was looking at the other set of elevator doors that were letting people off and Elizabeth was one of them. She was being pushed in a wheelchair by an orderly. He stepped back and watched his grandson and Elizabeth interact.
“Sorry I’m late.”
“It’s okay. You’re here now.” She smiled as he lifted the train and put it on her lap. She grinned up at him. “You found it.”
“All I did was pick it up. You called the store.”
“True, but the last 3 stores I did that with sold them anyway.” She reached out and grabbed his hand. “Thank you so much. He’s going to be so excited.”
He repeated himself.
“I’d do anything for Cam.”
Edward watched in fascination as he watched Elizabeth glare at Jason with a twinkle in her eye which made Jason smile. He also watched as Jason shifted to push her chair without any force, just quiet determination. He was beginning to think he needed a different strategy to bring Jason and his children back to the family.
Elizabeth answered the door and was surprised to see all of her friends.
“Did you all plan to show up at the same time?”
Emily hugged her as she passed.
“Nope. Just luck. You want all the food in the kitchen?”
“Sure. Does any of it need warmed up?”
Robin answered when it was her turn to hug Elizabeth.
“Ours doesn’t. We brought it as soon as it was done.”
Patrick started collecting coats and headed down the hall once he had them all.
“Let’s just put it all on the counter and do a buffet.”
Nikolas steered Elizabeth to the table.
“You sit and rest. We’ll bring you a little of everything.”
He followed Emily, Robin, Nadine, Kelly and Leyla into the kitchen. Patrick lingered and sat in the chair next to her when they were alone.
“How are you doing?”
“Better. I’m sore, but really glad to be home, especially with Christmas tomorrow.”
She laughed and rolled her eyes.
“Of course. He’s in his room coloring a picture for Santa right now.”
“Why didn’t you tell me? I want to be on Santa’s good side, too.”
She just grinned as he went to find Cameron.
December 25, 2006
Jason eyed the wrapped presents in the hallway as he let himself into Elizabeth’s apartment when he got no answer to his knock. He put his own wrapped gifts on the table. He walked quietly over to the couch when he saw Elizabeth sleeping on it. He leaned over and kissed her temple like he had all those months ago when they had come together. He smiled when she wrinkled her nose and snuggled further into the couch. He noticed the baby monitor on the end table so he sat in the chair at the end of the coffee table, propped his feet up and closed his eyes. Yes, he wanted to spend time with Elizabeth and Cameron but these quiet moments were special, too. He was awake almost immediately and his feet hit the floor after hearing Cameron through the baby monitor. He went down the hall quickly and opened Cameron’s door. He couldn’t help but return Cameron’s smile when the little boy caught sight of him.
“Jason, you came!”
“Look at my new toys!”
Jason came further into the room and sat on the bed. Cameron climbed off the bed and Jason smiled as Cameron showed him every toy he had gotten that morning. It wasn’t long when he heard steps in the hallway. Elizabeth stopped in the doorway and rubbed her eyes. She grinned.
“Guess I took a nap while he did.”
“You didn’t have to get up.”
“It’s okay. How was your morning?”
He stood up and met her in the doorway.
“It was good.” He leaned down and she met him halfway for a kiss. “It’s better now. How was yours?”
“Cam and I opened gifts when he got up and then we had breakfast. Then your sister surprised us with that mountain in the hallway.”
“I wondered about that.”
“Oh yeah. Those are all from your grandfather.”
“All of them?”
“Yes. She brought over a gift from your parents, too, which I let him open, but I don’t know what to do about the rest of them.”
He knew she could sense his tension when she reached out and smoothed a hand down his chest. She shrugged.
“It’s just a bunch of presents.”
“And I now you’ll talk to him if it becomes more.” Her hand slid down and she laced their fingers together. “Cam, now that Jason's here you can open your present from him and mommy.” Jason froze as Cameron jumped up and ran to him, hugging his leg. She tipped up on her toes and leaned into him. His mouth met hers automatically. She whispered as she pulled away. “Relax. You already know what it is.”
He let her and Cameron lead him to the living room. He was handed a large gift after being nudged onto the couch.
“What is it, Jason?”
He couldn’t help but grin at Cameron’s question.
“Open it and find out.”
Jason put it on the floor and Cameron wasted no time ripping the paper off. His excited screams were almost deafening and his joy was contagious.
“Chugging Charlie! Chugging Charlie!” Cameron’s eyes were wide when he looked up at Jason. “You got me Chugging Charlie!”
He felt Elizabeth’s fingers slide across the back of his neck. Her voice held back laughter.
“I’m really sorry he doesn’t like it, Jason.”
He still wanted to ask her why she put his name on the gift, but he wrapped his arm around her waist and gently tugged her down on the arm of the couch. She was slightly higher than him, but he didn’t mind as he felt her lean her cheek on his head.
She closed the door behind her and went back down the hallway into the living room. She was smiling as she came around the couch and sat down next to Jason.
“You really made his day. Well, you made our day. You were right to insist we spend today together. I'm glad we didn’t wait another year. Thank you.”
“I like being with both of you.”
She leaned into him more, wrapping her arms around one of his and tucked her feet up under her.
“We like being with you, too.”
“You didn’t have to put my name on his train.”
She stroke his shoulder with her cheek as she looked up into his face.
“Maybe not, but you made it possible for him to have it and I wanted to give you credit.”
“I did bring him a gift.”
“And he loved that, too. That boy loves bath time and you made it even better. No matter how many toys he opened from Edward the toys he talked about until he fell asleep were the train and bath paints. That’s because he knows you and loves you.”
“I love him, too.”
He shifted so he could look directly into her face. “He’s not the only one I love.” She felt the weight of his words as his mouth reached hers. She sighed into the kiss and wrapped her arms around his neck. He pulled back a little and rested his forehead on hers. “I love you, Elizabeth.”
She smiled and then kissed him again.

Kiss Me Slowly, Chapter 17
December 28, 2006
“So, how are things with Jason?”
“No!” Nadine hollered as she headed for the kitchen. “No juicy news until I get back with the popcorn.”
laughed as she watched Nadine run into the kitchen. She picked up a
slice of pizza off the coffee table and took a bite.
“Well, that’s one way to keep us in suspense.”
Emily rolled her eyes at Robin, but ended up laughing anyway.
“I’m really glad you guys were willing to come here and hang out.”
“Of course we would. Christmas Eve was fun, but there were boys here. This is just for us girls.”
Nadine skirted the end of the couch and sat between Robin and Leyla.
“Okay, I’m back. Spill the beans.”
Kelly gasped and almost choked while laughing.
“The kissing beans.”
Elizabeth reached behind her, grabbed a pillow, and threw it at Emily.
“Emily Quartermaine! You blabber!”
Nadine faked outrage.
“Hey, we’re your friends. We’re supposed to know these things. They’re in the friendship handbook.”
“I must have missed that edition.”
very funny.” Nadine threw a few pieces of popcorn Elizabeth’s way. “Now
give us details. Most of us are single and we need to live vicariously
through you and the hot…coffee importer.”
Emily rubbed her hands together when she saw Elizabeth blushing.
“We’re friends who kiss each other sometimes.”
“I’ve seen the way he looks at you, even with his girlfriend in the room. That’s way more than friends.”
“Maybe so, but that's all you’re getting out of me. Whatever this is is just beginning so I’m keeping it to myself.”
Emily looked at her knowingly and changed the subject.
“So, who is going to the New Year’s Eve bash at the Metro Court?”
“I can go if my doctor gives me clearance.”
Kelly popped Elizabeth in the leg lightly.
“You can go if you wear cute but sensible shoes, you sit often and you don’t dance.”
“You were supposed to say, No, Elizabeth, stay home.”
“I didn’t get that memo. Go, don’t go. Just be careful.”
“I’ll talk to Jason and we’ll see.”
“Kissing friends who date, huh?”
shut up, Nadine.” There was no heat behind her words. “I’m not
promising anything. If we go we probably won’t stay until midnight. I
don’t stay up late these days.”
“Of course, if you came home you could do something else at midnight.”
“Ewwww, Kelly! That’s my brother you’re talking about!”
Kelly grinned unrepentantly.
“Your hot brother.”
Emily laughed at Elizabeth.
“Whose side are you on?”
“Would that be the right or the left side?”
“Emily, you have my pillow. Throw it at Kelly.”
Kelly’s hands went to her hips and she pretended to glare.
“I’m your doctor. A happy and relaxed mommy makes for a happy and healthy baby.”
Elizabeth rolled her eyes.
“Sure. Very altruistic motives.”
“Okay, enough talk about my potential love life. What are we going to watch?”
December 31, 2006
“This was the best idea.”
“You’re going to get your dress wet.”
looked down at the bottom of her sundress. She had pulled them closer
to the water’s edge as they walked and the waves were starting to splash
the bottom of her ankle length dress.
“It’s okay. I don’t mind.” She looked up at him. “We are going to change before later, right?”
“That is the plan.”
She smiled lovingly.
“I do like the plan.”
looked back down at the sand as she wrapped her arm around his more
tightly bringing her closer to him. They continued down the sandy beach.
“Are you upset we missed the New Year’s Eve bash?”
“I have you, Cam and our future. You can’t beat that.”
He stopped walking and turned to face her.
“Do you know what you mean to me?”
She tipped up on her toes and laid her hands on his cheeks. She brushed his mouth lightly with hers.
Alcazar’s lieutenant entered quickly and stood waiting for instructions.
“What do you need?”
has proved to be more focused than I gave him credit for. The paternity
reveal and Ric’s body turned out to be child’s play. I want you to make
a statement by going after his woman. Don’t hurt her much but make sure
he knows his enemy isn’t messing around.”
stopped at the Metro Court bar one more time before she would relax for
a few hours. She checked to make sure there was enough alcohol behind
the bar and stocked in the back room for when the clock struck midnight
before making her way to the table where Sonny was waiting. She leaned
down to give him a quick kiss before sitting next to him.
“The party looks good, Carly.”
“Did you doubt me?”
“I know better than that.”
Carly waved to a waiter who brought a tray of champagne over. She took a flute for herself.
“Have you seen Jason yet? I want to make sure he dances with me later.”
“He’s not coming, Carly. He’s out of town.”
“What? Since when? And why didn’t you tell me?”
“He’s spending some time at the island.”
“You could have just said he was working.”
“He’s not, Carly.”
“Well, why would he go down there when—“
“Is he with Elizabeth? Why did you let him go down there with her?”
“I don’t boss him around, Carly. You can ask him when he gets home.”
She tipped her glass back and drank it all.
“You can bet I will.”
January 1, 2007
did not want to wake up but the sun was too bright. She stretched when
felt a hand drift down her side. She squeezed her eyes shut and drug her
pillow over her head which muffled her voice.
“We forgot to close the curtains last night.”
could have sworn she heard a chuckle but her hearing was lacking under
the pillow as well. The hand stopped and rested just above her left hip.
“We were a little preoccupied last night.”
pushed the pillow away and raised up on her right elbow. She opened her
mouth to tease him, but the look in his eyes stopped her. She leaned
towards him and he tilted to meet her. She sighed when their mouths
touched. She pulled away and ran her left hand down his face. A soft
smile graced her face.
“Yes, we were.” She stroked across his bottom lip with her thumb. She caught his gaze. “I love you.”
“I love you.” His hand roamed up her arm and settled in her hair. “I never thought we’d end up here.”
Her voice was soft and serious.
didn’t, either. But I’m really glad.” Her fingertips ghosted across his
cheekbone to the back of his neck. She tugged gently. “We may have had
trouble getting here, but it’s always been you, Jason.”
finally met hers and she quit thinking. She tucked her face into his
shoulder when her stomach growled. When Jason chuckled gruffly she tried
to push him away, but he held firm. He pulled back to look her in the
eyes. She could tell he wanted to laugh more.
“Hey, now. You made vows. We stick together, remember?”
true.” She tried not to laugh when his eyes narrowed at her expression.
“But we really should have put ‘must make your wife omelets’ in your vows.”
He moved in for another kiss.
January 2, 2007
was so focused on sketching Jason and Cameron playing in the sand and
water in front of her she didn’t realize she had an audience. She
startled when she saw sand fly up in her peripheral vision.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“It’s okay. I tend to get lost when I’m working.”
“I see that. Your sketch is lovely.”
Elizabeth looked up at the other woman and could see the sincerity on her face.
“Thank you. I usually paint, but I’m on vacation so I’m only doing the first step.”
“Even better. I know this is going to sound crazy, but I’d like to talk to you about a job.”
scooped up a handful of cool sand with her free hand. She let the
grains slide through her hand back down onto the beach.
“We don’t have to sit out here.”
“It’s okay. I like the quiet.”
“Me, too. The ocean isn’t quiet, but it’s peaceful.”
“We’ll come back when we can. We can’t keep Cam from his new favorite toy.”
“Yes, the ocean is one gigantic bathtub. He had such a good time today.”
“We both did. We should have gone inside earlier. Maybe he wouldn’t have fallen asleep in his dinner.”
She smiled and wrapped her arms together around his torso. He ran his hand down her back and then up around her shoulders.
“Maybe. I know usually you don’t bring your kids on your honeymoon but today was perfect.”
“It was. How did your sketching go?”
He looked at her in concern, but she simply smiled.
woman was walking by and saw my sketch. She gave me her card and would
like to see more of my work. Her card says she works for Clover
Publishing. It’s a children’s book publisher.”
“You don’t want to do it?”
“It’s not that. Seems too good to be true.”
you want I’ll have Stan look into it and make sure she’s legit. If she
is and it’s something you want to do then you should do it.”
January 3, 2007
Elizabeth was still flipping through the mail when Jason came down the hallway.
“He go down alright?”
“Yes, he’s so glad to be home. He was so sleepy he could barely talk to me.”
“That is sleepy. Thanks for putting him to bed.”
“You don’t need to thank me.”
“I’m thanking you because he was such a crabby pants.”
forehead furrowed when she flipped to an official looking envelope. It
came from the ADA’s office and she was almost afraid to open it.
“Should I thank you when you do it?”
“When I do what?”
“Put Cam to bed.”
“Why would you thank me for doing that? That’s what moms do.”
“And that’s what dads do, too. I want to be his dad, Elizabeth.”
She breathed out his name. “Jason.”
mean it. We’re a family now. I don’t want there to be doubts from
anyone about that. Not him, not Lucky, not the world. I want him to be
mine.” His fingertips went to her face and his voice was a whisper.
She laughed but it was shaky.
crying.” She grinned even as more tears fell. “Oh, Jason. He is yours.
You’ve been so good to him since we moved here, but yes, let’s make it
She moved to hug him and realized she still had the
mail in her hands. He glanced down and saw the return address on the top
“It’s from the ADA. I’m not sure I
want to open it.” She put down the rest of the mail and opened the
envelope. “Lucky’s trial has been scheduled.”
“When is it?”
“What else does it say?”
“They want me to come back in next week and go over my testimony again.” She looked up at Jason. “At least it’s not Ric, right?”
He tugged her closer and wrapped his arms around her.
“There is that. It’s going to be okay.”

Kiss Me Slowly, Chapter 18
January 4, 2007
Mercedes let Emily in before grabbing her purse.
“I’m leaving now!”
Elizabeth’s voice came from down the hall.
left Emily in the living room alone. Emily put down her own purse and
took off her coat. She laid it on the back of a chair as Elizabeth
“Thanks for coming here. Cam’s still tired from our
vacation.” They hugged before getting comfortable on the couch. “How was
the big party?”
“It was crazy. Lucky and Maxie came together
which caused some fireworks with Mac. We just got them pulled apart when
Lucky said he was serious about Maxie and Mac practically attacked him
again. Luke got involved and Nikolas was trying to calm everyone down. I
love Lucky, as you know, but this was a mess of his own making. I just
grabbed a glass of champagne and watched the show.”
Elizabeth covered her mouth with her hand and chuckled.
“Em! Sounds like I’m glad we missed the party.”
Emily sat straight up.
Imogene Webber! Is that a ring?” She grabbed Elizabeth’s hand and
pulled it toward her and then frowned. “It’s not a ring.”
Elizabeth tilted her head and her facial expression softened.
a ring, but it’s also a tattoo.” Emily’s mouth dropped open. “It’s a
braid that wraps around my finger. It represents our life: past,
present, future. This is it, for both of us.”
Emily’s finger stroked across the knuckle, just below the healing ink.
“Please don’t be mad. We’ve already had five weddings between the two of us and we just—“
squeezed Elizabeth's hand before pulling away and digging through her
purse. She found a tissue and let out a shaky breath.
not mad. Much.” She grinned at Elizabeth. “I would have loved to have
been there, but I can’t be mad when we’re officially sisters.” Emily
pulled her into a hug and laughed. “Sisters! Besides, if I want to get
mad I’ll just be mad at him. He’s my big brother. Speaking of him, does
he have a tattoo as well?”
“Yes, he has the same one, only wider.”
“My brother with a tattoo. That’s crazy, although I never expected you to have one, either. Can you imagine Carly’s reaction?”
“I don’t even want to know.”
Carly flung herself at Jason as soon as he was in her office.
She smacked his arm as she pulled away. “You missed my party. Sonny
said you were out of town. Surely work could have waited.”
“It wasn’t work.”
He sat next to her on the couch she had along the wall.
“I wanted you there, Jason.”
“Carly, you have lots of parties and you know how I feel about them.”
She rolled her eyes.
“Yes, I know, but it was New Year’s. Time to forget the last year and think of the new one.”
that’s what I did.” He made sure she was looking him in the eye. “I
took Elizabeth and Cam down to the island.” Before she could say
anything he made it worse. “Elizabeth and I got married.”
“That’s not funny, Jason.”
“Elizabeth and I got married.”
“Quit saying that!” She looked down at his hand. “See? No ring. Just a smudge.”
not a smudge.” She lifted his hand closer to her face. Her face lost
all color when she realized she was looking at a tattoo and not a dirty
spot. He pulled his hand away from her gently and wrapped it around her,
pulling her into a sideways hug. “This is it. She is it for me. I fell
in love with her a long time ago and it never really went away.”
“You don’t have to be married to her to be a father.”
His voice was just as quiet as hers.
“No, I don’t, but I want to be.”
She laid her head on his shoulder.
“Well, I suppose it could be worse. You could be having a baby with the gutter trash.”
His voice was annoyed.
I don't like Elizabeth, but it doesn't mean I can't be happy you broke
up with Sam.” He sighed. “The best I can promise you is I will try to be
polite to her. Nice is asking too much.”
He hugged her again.
January 5, 2007
was Elizabeth’s second day back at work and she was running late. She
huffed as she yanked her coat off as she came in the door of Kelly’s.
She flung it over her arm as she moved quickly to the counter. She
looked around for her boss and friend.
“Bobbie, I am so sorry I
am late. My grandmother cornered me in the parking lot. I figured it was
easier to just let her get it all out, but it was apparent she was in a
mood and never going to stop.”
“Sweetie, it’s okay. It’s my
fault anyway. She called asking for your schedule because she said she
had a Christmas gift for Cam. I should have known better. I’m very
Elizabeth swiped the air with her hand.
your fault, Bobbie. She’s a grown woman who refuses to see that I am
grown as well.” Her face scrunched up in a grimace. “I hate to do this,
but we need to talk about my job.”
Bobbie’s face morphed to concern.
“Are you alright?”
yes. I’m great. Perfect, really, but I’m going to give you my two weeks
notice. Lucky’s trial starts on the 15th and I won’t be reliable
because I won’t know when I’ll have to testify or how long it will take.
And even if I come back you’ll have to find someone again in a few
months when I have this baby.”
“Are you sure, Elizabeth?”
“You’ve been so good to me, but yes.”
“You know I support whatever you want to do.”
really appreciate that. I’ve only got a few months left before this
baby gets here so why not spend some extra time with Cam.” Elizabeth
turned as a customer at far table asked for some attention. She called
back to Bobbie. “And my new husband.”
When Elizabeth got back to the counter with 2 new orders and some plates she’d bussed Bobbie was waiting for her.
“You have some explaining to do, young lady.”
Elizabeth smiled at Bobbie’s tone, knowing she wasn’t really put out.
“Jason and I got married while Kelly’s was closed for the new year.”
“Are you happy?”
“Good.” She pointed to a table across the way. “Looks like table 6 needs a refill. I’ll be back in a minute. I want details.”
“Did she say yes?”
“You two set a date?”
“Somewhat. We got married on the 31st.”
Sonny’s eyebrows raised.
“Don’t want to let her get away? You could always just get her pregnant.” Sonny grinned. “Oh wait.”
“Very funny. We talked about waiting, but we’ve known each other for eight years and we always come back to each other.”
Sonny rubbed his lip with his finger.
“That you do.” He reached his hand out and Jason shook it. “Congratulations.”
had been eyeing the door every time the bell dinged for the last half
hour when finally she was rewarded with the sight she was looking for.
Jason came through the door while holding Cameron in his arms. She could
hear Cameron laugh as Jason brushed snow out of his hair. She knew the
minute he saw her.
Elizabeth knelt down gingerly and held him to her when he threw himself at her.
“Hi, Baby. Having fun with Jason?”
“Yes, but I’m hungry!”
Jason reached them and helped her stand. She raised up a little to kiss his cheek when he turned his face and pecked her lips.
“Hey. About done?”
“Yes, I’m so ready to sit down and just relax.”
They picked a table out of the way near the corner between the jukebox and the hallway to the stairs.
“I hear congratulations are in order.”
“I’m happy for you. Congratulations, Jason. Does Carly know or do I need to keep this quiet?”
“Thanks, Bobbie. And you can talk to her. She knows.”
“Should I wear body armor when I talk to her?”
“That’s why I ask. Alright, what do you guys want to eat? Cam?”
“You got it. Elizabeth?”
“Chili and a side salad, please. House dressing, please.”
“Burger and fries.”
“Water or something else?”
They all agreed to water and Bobbie went to put their orders in.
“Are you sure you’re alright?”
fine.” She smiled, but she knew he could see past her smile. She pulled
out some crayons for Cameron’s picture he was coloring. “I’m tired.
That’s all. But, if it makes you feel any better I put my notice in
today.” She covered her hand with his when she saw his face morph into
concern. “I know you wouldn’t ask me to give up my job, but there’s a
lot going on in the new few weeks, not to mention we’ll be having a baby
in a few months. It wouldn’t hurt to take it easy. Not to mention I
might get that illustrating job. I sent my work to her this morning.”
“This is what you want?”
don’t want me home more?” He growled low in his throat and pulled her
chair closer. She laughed and Cameron laughed when she did. “I’m
“You home and Cam taking naps?” She blushed. “Sounds like a good reason to take a late lunch.”
began fanning herself with her menu when she stopped suddenly. Before
Jason could question her she grabbed his hand. Her voice held wonder.
“Can you feel this?”
tucked his whole hand under her shirt and pressed it to her stomach.
She pressed down on a place where two of his fingers were. She felt it
flutter and held her breath, hoping he could, too.
“Is that the baby? It’s so light.”
Her voice was hushed.
“Your son is saying hi, Daddy.”
His eyes flashed up to hers. She was grinning. He tucked his hand behind her neck and gave a gentle tug. She leaned towards him.
“Isn’t this sweet?”
Sam’s tone was anything but sweet. Jason addressed Elizabeth instead.
“Why do you and Cam go see wha they have for dessert?”
Elizabeth nodded and held her hand out for Cameron.
“Come on, Cam. Let’s go see what George has been up to for dessert.”
“What do you need, Sam?”
“That’s all you have to say?”
“You interrupted our dinner with an attitude. What do you want?”
“I haven’t seen you in a couple weeks. It was our first Christmas not together in awhile. How was it?”
He glanced at the counter where Elizabeth and Cameron were sitting and then back at Sam.
“It was good.”
are not together. We are not even friends anymore after some of the
things you have said. I’m not trying to hurt you, but we don’t have
anything to talk about.”
He stood up, left her at the table and joined Elizabeth and Cameron at the counter.

was annoyed. She spent days looking for an appropriate wedding present
for Jason and Elizabeth as a show of good faith to Jason and when she
showed up at Elizabeth’s apartment she had the nerve to not be there.
Mercedes had told her she was probably still at Kelly’s even though she
had been expected home earlier. She strode into Kelly’s and looked
around. She flagged down a waitress when she didn’t see Elizabeth.
“Elizabeth? Her shift is over. They left out the back a little while ago because there was a fight out front.”
mumbled her thanks as she headed for the back door. She was not happy
having to track Elizabeth down but she knew Jason would appreciate her
support no matter how she felt about his wife. She threw open the door
and screamed for Max. Max was in the alley with her almost instantly and
pulling out his phone. She leaned down to see if Cody was breathing. He
was a bloody mess and Elizabeth was nowhere to be seen. Max hung up and
“Help is on the way. Is he alive?”
“Yes, but I don’t know how bad it is.” She hated to voice the next part, but it was inevitable. “Elizabeth is gone.”
Jason’s phone went to voicemail four times before he picked up.
She couldn’t help the tremor in her voice which only fueled the concern in his.
“What’s wrong, Carly?”
“You need to come home right now. Elizabeth is missing.”

Kiss Me Slowly, Chapter 19

was already almost home when he’d gotten Carly’s call. An unexpected
problem had come up two days ago and he’d had to leave town to take care
of it. Problems had been found and dealt with quicker than he
anticipated and he had been looking forward to surprising Elizabeth at
home tonight instead of tomorrow as expected. He’d missed Carly’s calls
because he’d been on the phone updating Sonny on what he’d had to do
while out of town. Ten minutes after Carly’s call he was driving away
from the airport.
His first stop up the elevator was to see Cameron.
He knew his son would be asleep, but he needed to see that for himself.
He knelt down by the bed and smiled as he covered Cameron back up. He
kissed his temple and left the room. He thanked Mercedes for staying and
promised to bring Elizabeth home. Once upstairs in Sonny’s penthouse he
“What do we know?”
“Two hours ago
Elizabeth’s shift ended. According to Bobbie there was some kind of
altercation in the courtyard with some college kids so Cody decided to
take Elizabeth out the back way. We were able to pull up some camera
footage from a camera so old it’s not a clear picture and it doesn’t
always stay on. They are met by five men. They both put up a fight, but
eventually Cody is beaten unconscious and Elizabeth is grabbed.”
“Show me the video.”
turned the laptop so Jason could see it. He hit play and they all
watched. Cody and Elizabeth came into view and they stopped suddenly.
Cody moved to stand in front of Elizabeth. She turned to back back in
and the feed was mostly hidden by static. It came back on and the men
were fighting with Cody. The feed cut out again. It came back on and
Elizabeth must have found a long piece of wood on the ground because she
was swinging it like a bat at her attacker. She missed the first time,
but on the back swing it hit him in the side of the head. He started
going down when the feed cut again. When it came back on a second man
had gotten past Cody and was nearing Elizabeth. This man slammed his
fist onto Elizabeth’s upper arm. She was still fighting the two men but
it was obvious something had happened because her movements slowed. Once
she quit fighting one of the men picked her up bridal style. Once she
quit fighting one of the men picked her up bridal style. Static started
covering the screen again and when it was clear so was the alley, other
than Cody’s body.
Jason stood up and the other six men did as well.
“I don’t have to tell you Elizabeth is important to me. Let’s go find my wife.”
Sonny gave the men their instructions.
“We’ll see what we can get from the alley. Hopefully Cody will wake up soon to give us more.”
The other men headed out first. Jason turned to Sonny, but Sonny was already putting his hand on Jason’s shoulder.
“We won’t stop until we find her, Jason.”
men spent an hour scouring the alley and another hour talking to Bobbie
and the other waitresses and there was little progress. Jason wanted to
punch something or shoot something or damage something. He wanted to
pace. He wanted to rage. He wanted to do anything, but sit still and
wait for a lead. He was grateful when word reached him that Cody was
awake. He went across to his own penthouse and up to the third room.
Cody couldn't talk easily or well because of all the swelling but he was
able to fill in one blank at least. The men had been teasing Elizabeth
about the needle and how it wouldn't hurt her, only put her to sleep
like Sleeping Beauty, but both she and Cody had fought to keep them away
from her. Jason told Cody he didn't blame him. They were outnumbered
and trapped. He also mentioned he could go back to guarding Elizabeth
once he was up to it if that’s what he wanted. Jason wished him a speedy
recovery and headed back to Sonny’s. He was watching the security
footage yet again when he thought he noticed something.
Rewind that a little.” It was difficult for Jason to watch the fight
again, but he thought he had seen something. “Stop. Right there.” They
all looked at the corner as the screen was splotchy from static. “They
didn’t all leave through the alley. This figure went back inside. Unless
they went out the front door with her they have to be upstairs.”

called Bobbie and asked her how many of her rooms were being rented
out. She had informed him only one was currently in use and it was for
Lucky. He thanked her and promised payment if they broke anything. He
hung up before she could ask any questions. He was going into Kelly’s
with a team of eight men. Two for Kelly’s, two for the bottom of the
stairs, two for the top of the stairs and two with him. No one was to
enter a room without him because he wanted to be there for whatever
Elizabeth might be dealing with. They were up the stairs and done with
the first two rooms rather rapidly as they were both empty. The third
room was Lucky’s which didn’t mean anything, but could be a problem if
he was home. They picked the lock and entered quickly and quietly. Even
in the dark room Jason knew immediately it was Elizabeth in bed with
Lucky. He breathed his first easy breath in seven hours. He didn’t
understand what he was seeing, but she was alive. She was on her side
facing the middle of the bed and her back was bare. Lucky seemed to be
shirtless as well, but Jason didn’t care about him. He sat on her side
of the bed and tried to wake her. His men wrapped Lucky with a blanket
from the closet and left with him.
“Elizabeth.” He rolled her to her back, careful to keep her covered and tried again a little more forceful. “Elizabeth.”
head moved a little to the side so he continued to talk to her. It took
about ten minutes for her to rouse enough to open her eyes. She tried
to smile. Her voice came out rusty.
“Hey. You’re okay now. I found you.”
Her eyes drifted shut and her voice was almost dreamy.
me? Why find me?” And that’s when it seemed to all come back to her.
She fought the drowsiness and tried to sit up. As she did she pulled the
sheet up instinctively to keep her covered and she panicked. “Why am I
in bed? Where, where are my clothes? What happened to me? Did somebody?”
She stopped and fear filled eyes looked at Jason. “Did somebody ra—“
She couldn’t finish the word and her stomach heaved. She whispered.
There was a trash can next to the bed and Jason had it out
for her almost instantly. She retched into it as tears fell. Jason felt
movement to his left and turned to find Elliott holding a wet washcloth
and a glass of water. Jason nodded and took it before the guard bled
back into the background. When she was quiet and looked at him he gave
her the cup. She rinsed her mouth out and he put the trash can on the
floor and eased closer to her. He wiped her face gently and she fell
into his arms holding him tightly to her. He closed his eyes as he
wrapped his own arms around her and prayed nothing more happened to her.
“Ready to go home?”
She nodded against his shoulder.
blanket appeared and he pulled back to unfold it. He leaned close again
to throw one side of the blanket behind her and drape it across her
shoulders. He watched her look around.
“They’re in the hallway.”
gaze continued to look around the room. He saw when she recognized
where she was and when she saw the rumpled sheets on the other side of
the bed. Her hand had been resting on Jason’s chest as he wrapped the
blanket around her, but now it clenched in his shirt as she became
aware. “Yes, Lucky was here, but we don’t know anything.” Her eyes came
back to his. His voice was deep. “We don’t know anything. Just
because he was here doesn’t mean anything. Let’s get you home and
checked out, okay?” He cupped her face gently. “I love you. We will get
through this together. I promise you that.”
There knock at the door before it opened and clothes were laid on the dresser near the door. Then it closed again.
“They’ll be too big but I thought that might be easier than this blanket.”
“You thought of everything.”
His expression turned to disappointment.
“I didn’t think of anything. I had the blanket and clothes in the car for emergencies. I should have brought you—“
Her thumb covered his mouth and her fingers covered his cheek.
“You found me and you’re here now. It’s everything.”
called Sonny as soon as the doctor left. He camel as soon as he got the
call. Jason told him what they found when they got to Kelly’s.
“How is she?”
up, but I don’t really think it’s hit her yet. She’s still coming off
of whatever they gave her so she’s groggy and tense. She’s taking a
shower so I don’t want this to take too long.”
“No, man. I get it. What are you going to do with Lucky?”
“I need to know if he’s a victim or a participant.”
“Let me take care of it. You take care of your wife.”
“I appreciate it. I’m afraid this will be a trigger.”
“You don’t have to explain to me. I’ll bring over dinner for later today as well.”
“Thanks. We’ll be back down in her apartment by then. We’re only up here so we didn’t disturb Cam and Mercedes.”
“If you need anything you call.”
“I’m not injured, just sleepy.”
His arms tightened around her as he carried her into the elevator. The doors closed slowly behind them.
“I need you near.”
couldn’t and wouldn’t argue with that. She needed him close as well.
Waking up and not knowing what had happened to her was a horrible
feeling. The doctor had determined that nothing physical had happened to
her which only eased her mind a little. Someone had still drugged her
and removed her clothes and if she thought about it at all she became
physically ill. Instead, she rested her ear on Jason’s chest as he
carried her into their apartment. His heartbeat calmed her and she
closed her eyes. She knew it was still too early for Cameron to be up
and she was extremely grateful she could count on Mercedes to take care
of him today. Jason carried her to their room and sat her on the bed. He
turned and she grabbed his hand.
“Hey, where are you going?”
“I’ll be right back. Just checking on Cam.”
“Will you wait for me?”
rose and moved to the dresser. She grabbed some pajamas and changed,
leaving Jason’s extra clothes in the floor. He held out his hand and she
took it as they went into the hallway. She opened the door quietly and
they watched him for a moment. She crept in and covered him up. He
rolled over and she quickly moved back to the door and into the hallway.
Jason shut the door and followed her back to their room. They finished
getting ready for rest. Once they were in bed she tucked herself into
his side and again rested her ear on his chest.
“It feels weird going to bed at four in the morning. I want to sleep but I don’t want to sleep.”
“You want to talk about it?”
She shook her head and his muscles contacted when her hair brushed across his chest. She grinned and pulled back.
He pretended to grow.
already know the answer to that.” He covered her mouth with his own.
She sighed with a smile after he pulled away. “Let’s sleep.”
arrived at the safe house less than an hour after he got the call Lucky
was awake. When he arrived he found a sullen Lucky sitting on the couch
flipping channels on the television. When Lucky saw him he threw the
remote down and jump up.
“What am I doing here, Sonny?”
Sonny put his hands out in front of him.
“We’re just checking on some things. What do you remember about last night?”
“Seriously? What kind of question is that?”
“Just answer it.”
Lucky rolled his eyes.
but don’t think I’m not telling my dad about this. I had dinner at
Kelly’s with Maxie. She got a call from Mac so she left early. I figured
I might as well go have a beer. I don’t think I stayed long but…”
He drifted off.
His brow furrowed.
“I don’t know. I can’t remember. The next thing I remember is waking up here.”
He huffed and crossed his arms across his chest.
“Yes, that’s it. Can I go home now?”
phone woke him. He was quickly out of bed and in the bathroom to answer
it. When he came back into the room Elizabeth was whimpering. He walked
over to her side of the bed and saw Elizabeth’s face pinched up in
fear. She was trembling. He sat next to her just about the time she shot
up to a sitting position.
He covered her upper arms with his and tried to get her attention.
jerked away when he touched her until she realized it was him. She
flung herself at him and he climbed over her legs to his side and laid
back down taking her with him. He stroked from the crown of her head
down to her hip repeatedly. He didn’t care how long it took but he
wanted her to be able to relax. After her breathing was back to normal
she drew odd shapes onto his skin with her fingers. Her quiet voice
eventually broke the silence.
“I was sitting in the park and I
knew what was coming and I couldn’t move. And then I was yanked off the
bench and dragged backwards. I could feel the cold and the wet and I
couldn’t do anything. Finally I was able to move and I screamed.”
you apologizing for the nightmare or what happened? Because it’s not
your fault or my fault.” She knew what he was thinking. She eased back
and tilted her head so she could look him in the eyes. “We did what we
were supposed to. We didn’t know they would manipulate us into using the
alley where five guys would attack us. Things are calm in our world
right now. There was no reason to suspect this would happen.”
He grinned and stroked her cheek.
She held up her left hand and wiggled her ring finger where her tattoo was healing nicely.
“I’m all in, Babe. All in.”
leaned down until his mouth brushed a whisper soft kiss over hers. She
held him there and he enjoyed her mouth under his for quite some time.
He pulled back and slid her hair away from her forehead.
“Sonny called if you're ready for a few more details.”
He noticed she closed her eyes as if to brace herself. She opened them back up and stared into his face.
tests came back with only Diazepam in your system. Thankfully, because
you’re in the middle of your second trimester our son should be fine. I
know the doctor did a basic check last night, but if you want to go to
the hospital we can.”
“I’ll call Kelly in a bit. Do you think Lucky is involved?”
still looking into his possible involvement, but my gut says no. Sonny
didn’t get the impression he was involved either when he talked to him.”
“So we don’t know anything yet.”
“Not yet. But we will.”
yawned as he made his way around the perimeter of the warehouse once
again. He only had twenty minutes left on his shift and then he could go
home and sleep. Night shift wasn’t fun, but they all took turns so no
one complained too much. As he turned the corner he saw a dark figure
run from the building. Milo yelled back to some of the other guys before
running after him. He didn’t get very far when the side of the
warehouse the unknown person came from exploded, setting off a chain
reaction that set the whole building on fire.
